Man I Exterminating
Many Species of Wild Life
In man's exploitation of Na
ture he has stupidly and self
ishly exterminated many spe
cies of wild life from the
earth, under the questionable
excuse of progress or expan
sion. In his scheme of t h 1 n g s,
there is no room for creatures
of the wild that he cannot use;
in consequence they must
move out of the way or per-1
ish. In many instances they
have done both; many kinds
that once flourished are now
gone forever.
The problem their elimina
tion was supposed to solve,
will still continue to plague
us, but the animals will have
been killed, or their habitat
destroyed.
A Long List
The list of those already
erased from the scene is long,
and a little 'sickening, for
nearly all of them were de
stroyed by indiscriminate and
ruthless slaughter. The extinc
tion of any of them did not
justify the reason, or help
man's position.
The Great Auk, a large

Troops 8 and 16
Twenty-six Troop 8 mem
bers and three leaders visited
the Lava Beds National mon
ument in northern California
last week end.
The troop toured the caves
with Troop 18 members. The
lour included skull cave,
mammoulh crater, Merrill ice
cave, Valentine cave and
mushpot cave.
Saturday night Troop 18 in
ducted the Troop 8 members
into the Order of the Modoc.
Sunday the hoys explored
Captain Jack's stronghold and
returned to Medford Sunday
afternoon.

Great Crimes j
In 1914 the last passenger.

ter of these birds was one of I
the greatest crimes ever per-1
petuated upon a helpless crea

The birds were left to rot on
the ground; killed only be
cause human beinus thirsted
for blood, and .stupidly believ
ed the supply of turds was in
exhaustible. Martha's Vineyard marks
the final stand of the heath
hen. The last one died in 1.U2,
while friends of the bird were
trying lo find a mate for it;
hut they had wailed loo long.
The whooping crane and the
trumpeter swan are still strug
gling precariously on the very
brink of extinction. A few re
main, but their position is far
from secure.

Repeal of Death
Penalty Asked
Salem - lira - The legisla
tive interim subcommittee on
sentencing, parole and proba
tion and habitual criminals
has voted to recommend
repeal of the capital punish
ment provisions of the state
constitution.
This would leave the ques
tion of capital punishment up
to the IIKil Legislature.
At present, first degree
murder in Oregon is punish
able by death unless the jury
recommends life Imprisonment.
