It problems for a doctor - to ' may cause her and her family know when the peculiarity he has just found, perhaps in an x-ray film, has nothing i to do with producing the pa- lwit I : i.vmp- toms. Actual ly, if I were asked by the Dean of a Medical School to help him pick a really great teacher, I would look for a man Alvarez who. time and time again, I heard saying to his assistants, "Pay no attention to that gall stone or that puckered duo denum (supposed to show an ulcer), or those many diver ticula (little pouches) on the colon, or that highly movable kidney; they are entirely silent and harmless; the only trouble with this poor woman is that she has discovered that her husband has a mis tress." For many years I have been saying that the most impor tant course that ought to be added to the curriculum of a medical school should be one on recognizing easily and quickly all those conditions which, in a given case, have nothing to do with the pa tient's illness. Why do 1 feel so strongly about this? Be cause so often I am grieved to see a patient turned against his or her fine and sensible old family doctor by the sup posedly important finding that some new doctor thinks the old one missed. In many cases the old one either knew it was there or he didn't care if it was, because he knew so well that the patient's troubles were all due to nervousness or anxiety, or unhappiness. Rarely Mentions It As I said, this week I re ceived several letters from people who felt I should write a column scolding doctors who miss finding some congenital abnormality such as an extra rib in the neck. Several times a year I see someone with a "cervical" extra rib, but I rarely mention it to the per son, because his or her symp toms are not such as could possibly be due to pressure of the extra rib on arteries or nerves. The rib is only a harm less and accidental finding, like an extra little finger on one hand. The finding of rich a pecu liarity by a physician with out much experience, know ledge, wisdom and honesty Siskiyou Prints Largest Editi Ashland The largest edi tion in the history of the cam pus newspaper at Southern Oregon college waa published this month with a 10 page special election edition, ac cording to Siskiyou Advisor Hugh G. Simpson. SOC students have edited the weekly Siskiyou for 33 years, and this is the largest paper ever published, he said. The Siskiyou is printed by Iverson Printing company, Ashland, and owner Wally Iverson praised the students on the publication of the 10 page edition saying, "Editor Marilyn Alter and her staff are to be commended on the fine work they did on this issue, the ease with which their copy flowed through our shop, and on their excellent publication." A large section of the paper dealt with campus elections, allowing space for comment by all candidates. Coverage of the visit to the campus by Senator John F. Kennedy also took prominence in the edition. Members of the Siskiyou staff are editor, Marilyn Al ter, Klamath Falls; business manager, Dean Walsh. Sandy; news editor, Myrna Pfnister, Medford; feature editor, Wally Gober, Klamath Falls; instruc tional assistant, Bill Black, Ashland; circulation manager, Marjorie Tarn, Hawaii; sports editor, John Nolen, Klamath Falls, and photographer, Jer0 Taylor, Ashland F&R aatvJ Br MEDFORD, OREGON STORE BUILDING AND APABTMENlG Aeartmenf -turimhsd. vacant far aaw ewnarl Stare rente'. Finally, it may lead the woman into a needless and useless or even disastrous operation. Unstable ttereous System For instance; the last wom an I saw who was operated on for a cervical rib, was just delighted when it was found. Other doctors had told her what I feel was true, namely, that she had apparently in herited an unstable and un happy nervous system as her small share of her mother's insanity. But she hated this diagnosis, and naturally was thrilled and delighted when her young surgeon told her that her troubles were all due to a "cervical rib that every one else had missed." When her old family doctor brought her to me, 1 agreed with him that her tendency to regurgi tate her food and to ache and hurt all over her body could not be due to the rib. She had no trace of the symptoms that, in rare cases, are produced by an extra rib. But the wom an demanded the operation. Unfortunately, working in a ticklish field where anything can happen, even her able surgeon bruised some nerves, and thereby produced almost constant and agonizing pain down one arm. As a result of a year of this, the woman went into a bad nervous breakdown. The moral of this tale if, of course, that not infrequent ly the man who thrills neu rotic woman by finding some ting "that everyone else missed" ia not only wrong, but very dangerously wrong.
