Better Qualified
Teachers Lacking
In Small Districts

Salem - (UPD - Bigger school
districts In Oregon tend to
gobble up better qualified
teachers and this is a problem
for small school districts.
Not only that, but it seems
to be on the rise.
So says a research paper
delivered to the Legislative
Interim Committee on Educa
tion, prepared by the Univer
sity of Oregon's Bureau of
Educational Research, the
second in a series.
The report, titled "Educa
tional Status of Oregon Teach
ers," states that larger dis
tricts recruit teachers with a
greater amount of prepara
tion, those with baccalaureate,
master's and doctorate de
grees. The report suggests that
"very careful attention" is
needed in Oregon to upgrade
the preparation of teachers in
small districts and remote
sections.
The paper, prepared under
the direction of Keith Gold
hammer, shows that in the 10
years from 1949 to 1959 big
gains were made In the extent
to which Oregon teachers
were qualified for their jobs.
A general upgrading through
out the state was found.
It also was learned that 81.8
per cent of the state's teachers
in the 1958-59 school year
taught In western Oregon.
Eighteen counties in the
eastern part of Oregon had
only 3,060 of the state's 16,818
teachers, reflecting the popu
lation makeup.
Eighty per cent of that 16,
818 In 1958-59 held baccalaur
eate degrees. Some 3,820 had
master's degrees and 95 held
doctorates, most of these In
"first class" districts.
' In order to compare the edu
cational level of teachers in
different parts of Oregon, the
researchers divided the state
into seven areas.
The second area - the Wil
lamette valley - had 50.8 of
the state's teachers, according
to the report, and the highest
overall level of teacher
preparation.

Aspirin Can Cause
Internal Bleeding

It has often been reported
that aspirin causes significant
internal blood loss through
the stomach but reports on the
effect of various amounts of
the common pain killer have
not been in agreement. Drs.
Richard M. Watson and Rich
ard N. P i e r s o n Jr. of St.
Luke's hospital, New York, of
fer additional evidence that
America's most popular pill
can cause trouble.
Volunteers Studied
To the Federation of Ameri
can Societies for Experimen
tal Biology meeting here,
they reported a study of 90
normal volunteers. Sixty
women and 30 men received
600 milligrams of aspirin
dally for seven days. This is
equivalent to 10 aspirin pills
of five-grain strength daily.
These subjects got portions
of the daily dosage four times
each 24-hour periods.
The average amount of
blood loss per day for this
group before they began tak
ing the aspirin was less than
one milliliter. However, 70
per cent of these same persons
showed a significant increase
over this tiny amount while
taking the aspirins, Dr. Wat
son reported. The average
blood loss among the group
after they began taking the
aspirin rose from one to 4.8
milliliters. Ten per cent of
these persons lost more than
10 milliliters daily.
