(UPI Telephoto) Contest on Old Ads Held by Groceteria "If you want government provisions you will have to hurry." This is a quotation from a Groceteria super-market ad vertisement in the Dec. 16, 1920 edition of the Mail Trib une. The Groceteria recently concluded a contest in which they offered prizes to the per ons bringing in the three old est Medford Mail Tribunes containing Groceteria ads. They started advertising in the paper on Nov. 20, 1820, when William Gates and Wil- Personal Income Sets Record High In Oregon in '59 Personal Income In Oregon moved up to a record high in 1959, according to a prelimi nary estimate made by the office of business economics, U. S. department of com merce, according to the Port land field office. Total Income received by residents of the state last year was $3,809 million, compared with $3,338 million in 1858 Oregon's Income Increased aeven per cent over the pre vious year. Nationally, Income rose six per cent. On a per capita basis, In come in Oregon last year was $2,130, a gain of seven per cent over the 1958 average of $2,008. The nations per cap ita income last year was $2. 140. It was the first time since 1933 that Oregon per capita Income has surpassed the na tional figure. Factory Payrolls Factory payrolls In the state moved ahead at a faster rate than in the nation, with the largest increase occurring in the key lumber industry. In addition, the agricultural In come in 1959 was little chang ed from the previous year, and Oregon did not feel the damp ening effect that the decline in farm Income exerted on the overall Income flow national ly. - Developments In lumber manufactures have special sig nificance for Oregon economy, tor this industry alone ac counts for more than half of all factory payrolls and as much as one-eighth of all In come In the state. Iiam Lydiard opened the Gro ceteria for business In their first store at the corner of Sixth st. and Central ave. Gates and Lydiard started their business by selling World War I surplus govern ment provisions. One of the items listed in the ad in the Dec. 16, 1920, paper was "12 pounds of canned bacon for $2.50." This ad, brought in by E. G. Henselman, 937 North Central ave., was good for the sec ond place prize of a battery powered lantern. First prize, a percolator and two covered frying pans, went to M. D. Singler, 1270 North Ross lane. That edition was dated Dec. 6, 1920, Just two weeks after the Groceteria opened. j Oddly enough two persons brought In the next oldest paper and split third prize of a imported German wall clock. They,wcre B. A. Boyce, route 1, box 446T, Central Point, and R. H. Singler, 27 Rose ave., who brought in June 3, 1921, editions. Lowell Iverson, part owner and assistant manager of the store, admits he may have some difficulty in dividing the clock between the two, but think something can be worKea out. A Tribune dated Aug. IB. 19.(5, was perhaps the most interesting of the group, even though it didn t win any prizes. This edition contained the story of the death of Will Rogers and Wiley Post who were killed in a plane crash near Pt. Barrow, Alaska, Some 30 papers, most of them from the 30's, were brought to the store during the contest, Iverson said.
