Jt varies with flfi'i m" '"I the age and If' I condition and t e mperament of the person. Some of us physicians in sist that all of o u r patients use only one type of treat ment, but I Dr Alvarei think this is unwise. Some of us forbid laxatives to all of our pa tients, but there are thousands of old people who do very well with a laxative pill taken perhaps twice a week at bed time. The secret is not to take It every day. If one does that, one may wear out its efficacy. I doubt if laxatives do people much harm. I never saw anyone who I thought had been damaged by taking them. In a recent column I de scribed how to take enemas. The taking of an enema is often the simplest, surest, quickest, least bothersome, and least objectionable way in which to get relief from a distressing constipation. I am sure enemas do no harm. Many persons can avoid constipation by taking some bulk producing food every day. The great secret is to change every few daya from perhaps canned plums to can ned figs and then back again. The reason for this changing la that if a person continues to use only one bulk producer, the bowel is likely soon to get to used to It that it will not react at all. Don't Eai Enough Many thin little women much need to be reminded that if, each day, they eat only a little concentrated food that leaves no residue for the large bowel, they must not expect to have more than perhaps two bowel movements a week. They don't eat enough to make a bowl movement every day! Some persons like a "salts" type of laxative. A mild one is a calcined mag nesia, or a milk of magnesia. Other persons like a pill. This usually contains case ara, aloes, senna, or phenolphtha Icin. Constipation is hard to de fine. I have known many women and some men who were perfectly comfortable and happy with a bowel move ment once In a week or 10 days. I once gave such a young woman a certificate to be flashed on her anxious relatives to the effect that she could let her bowels alone for as long as she wanted to! Another thing people must sometimes remember is that if one day the large bowel gets entirely cleaned out by a purgative, or an attack ot diarrhea, It may be three days before it fills up again to a point where It needs to over flow. A Burning Tongue So nianv aging persons write asking about a burning tongue that came suddenly one day, that I must keep com menting on it occasionally. In these cases, no one can see anything wrong with the tongue. As a result, a minute part of the brain was damaged. I have never heard of any treatment that did any good. My only hope for these people is based on the fact that I have seen some of them who, after some time, lost the burning. I know an old man who, one day in a moment, got a severe burning in half of his tongue. He was lucky in that, in a few minutes, the burning cleared up and was gone. A Shaking Head Many persons past middle age are wondering why they keep shaking their head from side to side. I do not know exactly. It must be due to something wrong in one of the little centers of the brain - a center which, normally, enables us to hold our head and our hands quiet. I Im agine that in some cases the trouble begins with a harden ing of a little artery that sup plies the center with blood. I know of no medicine that will surely stop the shaking, but there a number of drugs that can be tried. Efforts are now being made to find an operation that will give relief, as it often does in cases of Parkinson's disease (shaking palsy of the hand).
