We consider it worthless when it doesn't benefit us or show ui a profit. But what we so oft en consider trash, someone else may think is valuable; this applies to fish, birds and animals as well as household or personal articles. Most fishermen think any fish they catch is worthless unless they can eat it or sell It. These so-called "trash fish" or "rough fish" are left on the boat or on the beach. Be ing very pro fit-conscious, most of ui do a great deal of yelping about things that are supposedly "no good." We figure that, inasmuch as a fish has no food value, it should be destroyed. The fact that man has not found a profitable use for some Individual variety of fish does not mean the species is useless; it only reveals our own Ignorance of the true reason for the existence of such a fish. All so-called "rough fish" lay eggs that go a long way toward feeding other forms of life, some of which man can use. On the face of the thing we might stupidly think the more trash fish eggs there are the more trash fish there will be but this Is not entire ly true. The small fish, even trash fish, may become food for game fish. To a hungry Auto Found; Nurse Listed as Missing Orifino, Ida.-IUPD-The where abouts of Miss Alice Burkett, 27, remained a mystery today after Idaho state police and skin divers found her Swedish make sedan on the bottom of the Clearwater river about five miles from here. The Portland, Ore., nurse disappeared April 17 while en route to Portland from Ka miah, Ida. Sunday, three Oro flno skin divers located her car upright 1 nabout 35 feet of water. No one was found in the vehicle. The car was positively iden tified as that of Miss Burkett by Its Oregon license plates. The vehicle was not damaged much and the window on the driver's side was rolled down. This is a simple, fundamental law of nature; it has been operat- ina iinp th hatfinnlna and man has never been able to improve on it. When any of us, even a fish scientist, tries intelligently to figure out just when a fish is really worthless, we are all in over our collective heads. We are lost in a wildernesa of doubt. We do not know enough yet about the work ings of the master plan; we don't know for sure which is good or which is wholly bad. Shows Its Value Even the fisherman who uses a "rough fish" for bait is proving himself wrong, for if the desired fish takes the bait it shows the value of the "trash fish." So if it's food, It's not trash. No, there is no such thing as a "wholly useless fish," there never was, probably never will be. There Is no ut terly useless species of fish. Just because someone labels a fish as "junk" doesn't make it so; we just don't know enough yet to make use of these by-products. It is only another example of how far behind we are in understanding the workings of Nature's overall plan. Na ture figured these thingt out eont ago. It still works, we just haven't caught up with her yet.
