Motorists Warned About Youngsters Backed by statistics show ing an average of two children injured every day in Oregon traffic, Medford's Chief of Po lice Charles P. Champlin cau tioned motorists to watch out for children who are not watching out for themselves. Motorists should watch for such things as children play ing near the roadway, jay walking, running from behind parked cars, crossing against traffic signals or using poor bicycling techniques, he said. Champlin pointed out that 775 children were injured and 26 killed in car-pedestrian and car-bicycling accidents in Oregon last year. Another 23 youngsters were killed and 1,853 injured who were pas sengers in cars involved in accidents. He said "there has been a gratifying reduction in traffic mishaps around schools be cause of school patrols, traf fic officers, signals and other devices, but parents now need to caution their children on traffic self-discipline when they are away from school areas." Good home and school safe ty programs plus alert motor ists, all contribute to a formu la for child traffic safety, he said.
