4 MAIL TRIIUNE, Medford, Or. -The Charming Meedowlark If CltTtrly Disguised 'Rural America is more beautiful because of this cheerful bird that someone called the Oil Field Lark, Crescent Stare, Mudlark Marsh Quail, but which is more commonly known as the bird of the grassy meadow the mcadowlark. Any bird that sings so sweetly and spends so much of its time in a meadow would Just naturally be called a meadowlark. Other species of mcadow lark found throughout parts .of the west and a smaller, somewhat darker colored va riety, common In Florida, ex tend the range of this beloved bird to practically the entire .United States. ' The meadowlark is about the size of the quail and like the game bird is brown and black, streaked with white markings. The tail of the lark .is short and pointed and the bill long and slender. And of course the meadowlark wears a bright yellow vest and a !black neck-scarf. J The clear, flute-like whistle of the meadowlark is an in "separable part of American farmlands and hillsides, and dds a great deal of charm to rural life. ;V Finding the nest of the 'meadowlark is an experience in perseverance, for the nest 'is always cleverly hidden, us ually with a canopy of grass -woven over the top like a pro tective hood. In many nests 'there it even a tunnel, made by interlacing grass stems to gether through which the mother and father bird can ;eome and go from the con cealed nest. Living as they do ton the ground, every precau tion must be taken to keep se teret the nest's location, for on J the ground a host of two and tour, footed enemies are' al J ways searching for tasty eggs lor tender young birds. Watkins this bird, and then took ex tensive measures for the bird's protection. One can hardly help noticing that a meadow lark, siting on a fence post facing you, is a pretty con. spicuous object. The bright yellow vest with the black throat patch is plainly visible from a considerable distance. But if a hawk or a boy with a gun shows up, the lark quickly flies directly to the ground where it squats. Now the bright yellow cannot be seen. The brown and black of the birds back blends in per fectly with the surroundings Its ability to change its color dues not indicate the meadow lark is "two-faced," but rather "two-bodied." The side of itself the meadowlark shows to its friends is bright and sunny, but the side it shows to its enemies is so drab and dull that it is practically invisible.
