M e d f o r d will entertain, Yreka, Calif., Ashland will host Klamath Falls and Eagle Point will vie at Talent. The Ashland-KF miv is a makeup for a postponed engagement. It will count in the Southern Oregon conference, The Black Tornado tangle with Yreka has no league significance but will give Medford an idea on how it compared to Klamath Falls. Yreka split a series with the Pelicans, winning the second game 9 to 3 after losing the first 9 to 10. Medford goes to Klamath next Saturday, EP-Talent action is non-loop. Games Postponed Three baseball games sched uled for Friday in this area were postponed because of wet weather, The contests were Ashland high at Grants Pass, Illinois Valley at Eagle Point and Butte Falls at Talent. It was reported that the field at Grants Pass was not in playable condition. The game set for Eagle Point, it was said, could have been played but with some difficult and hazard. Talent telephoned Butte Falls when rain fell Fri day morning and the game was called off. Later, It was realized the fray could be con tested. However, Butte Falls could not be informed. Tele phone lines were out. Ashland has reset the Grants Pass tiff for April 26. Butte Falls and Talent plan to vie on Wednesday and Eagle Point and IV makeup is slated, tentatively, for May Eastern Oregon Blasts OTI10-3 La Grande (UPD Eastern Oregon college blasted out 11 hits to overwhelm Oregon Tech, 10-3, here Friday. Jackson county entries, St, Mary's of Medford, Phoenix and Rogue River wound up one-two-three. The St. Mary's Crusaders with victories in four events and records in two claimed their second straight Hay ward mantle with 42 points. Phoenix, which won the shuttle hurdles and gleaned 30Vi points, was runner up for the second successive year. Rogue River with Art Johansen, taking the pole vault with a record 11 feet 5 3A inches, followed with 21', 2. Alsea was fourth with 18 and Yoncalla fifth with 17'i. The five top teams topped a field of 28 schools. Hanby- Clears 13-3 Scappoose with 43 counters gained the Class B titular tro phy. Southern Oregon high' light in the class was a tre mendous record - shattering pole vault by Mike Hanby, Illinois Valley. Hanby, who earlier this week had cleared i2-6 in a dual meet at Rogue River, soared 13 feet 3 inches in the Haywards to smash the only standard by 11 inches. After Scappoose In the B division scoring came Reyn olds 32 13, Coquille 221 j and Myrtle Point and Siuslaw, each with 22. The St. Mary's combination of Roger Hout, Bob Evans, Terry Cooper and Alex Mete established new marks of 45.4 in the 440-yard relay and 1:40.2 in the sprint med ley. The 440 record had stood since 1942. Crusaders Dave Rouhier, Mike Austin, Tom Rouhier and Dick Evans also copped the two-mile relay in 9:06 and Dick Evans won the high jump at 5 feet 8 Inches. The Medford school also took third in the distance medley and Dan Rouhier was fifth in the discus for the Crusaders. A Talent high entrant, Morris Sterret, was third in the Javelin. Only other tally for Illinois Valley in Class B was for a tie for sixth place in the shuttle hurdles. Miteff Gains Victory by TKO Atlantic City, N.J. - fl'PD -Alex Miteff, the Buenos Aires butcher boy, is chopping his way Into contention In the heavyweight division. The Argentine puncher scored a sixth-round technical knockout over young Don Warner of Philadelphia Fri day night in a nationally-televised fight. It was Miteff's third straight kayo of the year. He knocked out Jose Georgetti in two rounds and needed only four rounds to dispatch Monroe Ratliff in earlier fights this year. Curently ranked eighth among the heavyweight con tenders, Miteff is almost cer tain to move up a notch or two on the basis of his latest vic tory. The 25-year-old Miteff suf fered a deep gash over the left brow in the second round and his face was practically hidden tinder a film of blood in the third session. But Miteff. who weighed j 202' pounds to Warner s 102, kept pounding away and his bull-like rushes eventually wore down the 20-year-old Philadelphian. (UPI Telephoto) SF Trounces Cubs; No-No Game Ruined By United Press International Sam Jones yielded only an eighth-inning home run to Walt Moryn Saturday when he pitched a one-hitter that carried the San Francisco Giants to a 6-1 victory over the Chicago Cubs. A crowd of 29,771 at the SIS million Candlestick Park in San Francisco roundly booed Moryn's blast off Jones, who had pitched a three-hitter against the St. Louis Cardin als in his opening day assign ment. Jones pitched a no-hit- Bevos Win PCL Opener Tacoma, Wash. - (UPD - Pow ered by George Freese's two homers and clutch pitching by Lynn Lovenguth, the Portland Beavers beat Tacoma, 7-2, in a Pacific Coast league game here Saturday. TRIBE RECALLS DILLARD Daytona Beach, Fla. -l!PD- The Cleveland Indians Friday recalled outfielder Don Dll- lard from the Toronto Maple Leafs. Dillard sent down earlier this spring, batted .400 In 10 games with the Tribe last year. Dillnrd played 93 games with San Diego of the Pacific Coast league, batting .283 and driving in 55 runs. John Buzhardt started for the Phils but never got past the second inning as the Braves rallied for five runs to take a 7-0 lead. With that kind of hitting, Lew Burdette breezed to his first victory, yielding seven hits, includ ing a home run by Pancho Herrera. Jay Hook also hurled seven hit ball for the Cincinnati Reds in an 11-3 truimph over the Pittsburgh Pirates. Bouncing back from a 13-0 drubbing at the hands of the Pirates on opening day, the Reds raked rookie Jim Um bricht and two relievers for 14 hits. HKS: walls, CInclnnaU. 3 Close Sets Record As U of O Wins Seattle - (DPD - The Univer sity of Oregon's powerful Dave Edstrom won the high and low hurdles and placed in three other events Satur day to lead the Webfoots to a 77-54 northern division track and field victory over the Uni versity of Washington. Edstrom's time of 14.4 sec onds in the 120-yard high hur dles was a new meet record. He stepped over the 220-yard low hurdles in 24 seconds flat to win that event and placed second in the discus, third in the shotput and third in the broad jump. Oregon's Jerry Close regis tered a new broad Jump rec ord in the meet, sailing 23 feet, 91'. inches. The Webfoots Dyrol Burle son, who is one of the beter milera in the nation, won his specialty in 4:16.1, a slow time for him. He was follow ed by Washington's standout miler, Jack Larson. The race was run in sunny weather, but on a track soaked by several days of rain. Other winners for Oregon were Jerry Stubblefield who placed first in the discus and D. C. Mills who took first in the javelin. GP Netters Post Win Grants Pass high held un disputed first place in South ern Oregon conference tennis after tripping Medford 5 to 2 on Saturday. The Cavemen are unmarred in the loop. Medford suffered its first setback in three league matches. The Tornado scored one of its wins in doubles in which Gary Cummings and John Shaw beat Jim Blacksmith and Bud Orr, 4-6, 6-0, 6-3. Dave Ryn took a singles tiff for Medford, 6-1, 6 1, over Dan Mannan. GP victors in singles were Blacksmith over Cummings, 6-2, 2-6, 6-3; Orr over Shaw, 6-3, 6-3; Larry Janssen over Jim Randies 2-6, 6-1, 6-2, and Dick Newman over John Mc Kinley, 6-4, 6-3. Dean had seven hits in nine times up for a .777 average. He had driven in 12 runs. The statistics include both conference and non-league games and were compiled by Medford Coach John Kovenz from reports sent in by coach es of the circuit. Ranking second percentage wise was Dennis Walker, Grants Pass, with .625. John Bianchi, Klamath Falls, and Mike Parsons, Medford, each had .500 marks. None of the foregoing, however, had as many trips to the plate as Don Willey, Klamath Falls, who was .470 on eight for 17. Willey had hit two home runs and batted in nine mark ers and he and Dick Rags dale, Medford, each had scor ed six times. Dean led in two base swats with four and Dean Dunson, Klamath Falls, had three triples to his credit through last week end.
