April 14. 1960 B 11 Aspirin Cleared Of All Blame in PepticlllcerCases London, (Science Service) Reports that aspirin causes bleeding of the stomach and intestine, peptic ulcers and anemia have been greatly exaggerated. For 22 years British med ical journals have printed the pros and con of whether as pirin, a frequent, regular medication in illnesses such as rheumatoid arthritis, could eventually cause the patient to develop a stomach or in testinal candition. In an attempt to settle the controversy, Dr. F. D. Bargar and J. J. R. Duthie of North ern General Hospital, Edin burgh, Scotland, studied 244 rheumatoid arthritis patients, most of whom were taking regular doses of aspirin. Significant Increase During a six-year period, the group showed a signifi cant increase in hemoglobin level, which drops in cases of anemia, bleeding and ulcer. The amount of increase was about the same as for a small er group not on regular as pirin, the researchers report ed here in the British Med ical Journal. Only three patients (1.2) developed evidence of peptic ulcer while on aspirin. This is about the same incidence of peptic ulcer as in the gen eral population, indicating these few patients might have developed peptic ulcers whether they had taken as pirin or not. Synthetic Hormones Pack a Big Punch London -(Science Servlce)- Sex hormones that pack a big eer punch than those brewed by nature have been synthe sized by a team of Dutch and Swedish scientists. By chaning atoms on the outside edges, rather than in the center, of a known steroid hormone molecule, the scien tists were able to produce sub stances 5 to 25 times as active as progesterone, a female sex hormone that prepares the uterus for pregnancy. In clini cal trials there were no ad-, verse side effects. A third artificial substance related to testosterone, a male sex hormone, showed no simi lar activity, and a fourth sub stance acted against the ste roids that produce maieness. Details of the research were reported here in the current issue of the British scientific i journal, Nature. The research ers were E. H. Reerink, H. F. L. Scholer, P. Westerhof of the Philips-Duphar N. V. lab oratories, Weesp, Holland; A. Querido and A. A. H. Kasse naar of the University of Ley den, Holland; and E. Diczfa lusy and K. C. Tillinger of Karolinska hospital, Stock-1 holm, Sweden. ! Sen. Morse Sees Chance To Win Eugene - (UPD - Sen. Wayne Morse said Wednesday he be lieved he had "a very good good chance" to win the Dem ocratic presidential nomina tion if the convention was deadlocked. Morse, continuing a cam paign tour of the state, added in an interview that it appear ed to him the convention was likely to be deadlocked. He said he believed no one could get enough votes to be nomi nated for the first several ballots. He branded as "a complete falsehood" opinions by some members of his party that he had something to do with the petition campaign to put his name on the Oregon primary ballot. Morse said he had tried to stop the campaign but when he saw it was continuing he decided to make a fight for the nomination.
