Florence Pearl Nuttall, 50-year-old Compton, Calif., grandmother, Is booked on a charge of "corporal punishmenf-accused of jabbing two of her six grandchildren with a two-Inch needle and putting pepper and a matchstick into their eyes. Mrs. Nuttall was accused by her son and daughter-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. DouElas E. Nuttall. who told deputies that their boys, An thony, 5, and Jeffry, 20 months, had been "tortured" while the grandmother was baby sitting for them. (UPI Telephoto) Small Worlds Around Us By Lynn M, Watkini ( The Little Snowflee. 1 ' Perplexes Scientists The cold water from the melting snow seeps down Into the litter of the forest floor and the unbelievable happens thousands, sometimes mil lions of tiny, long-legged in sects escape from their tiny crypts; struggle up out of the I ground, and begin what seems ' like a Joyous dance on the ' snowbanks. Scorpionflles, or what are more commonly called snow fleas, perplex all these ob servant folks who look with unbelieving eyes at these tiny insects with the cold feet and ' unchapped wrists, who seem ingly enjoy gamboling on the crest of snowbanks. They resemble grasshoppers in general bodily shape, al though much smaller, with long slender lees and the ability to hop. Many of them live the year around in the dead leaves and debris of the forest floor, but seem to be come nervously excited or ac tive in the wintertime. Considered flightless In sects, some of the males of some species, of which there are about a dozen kinds tn the United States, have bedrag gled looking wings that start lingly resemble a worn-out shaving brush, reduced to a tiny size. His Food It is believed the adult scorplonfly, or snowflea, feeds on dead vegetable matter, or perhaps partly on other In sects, whose bodies are decay. cd, or partly so. These strange little creatures, who happily tolerate cold feet could al most be said to live always in dampness without ever getting wet. Usually they are present on snowflelds during the entire winter but become increasing. ly abundant on warm days. If the sun melts a thin film of the top snow, the snowflakes begin their everlasting hop ping Maybe that's why they jump so readily, because they arc naturally hoppers; little skiers with built-in- skis, who don't go Indoors by a warm fire when the day is done, but who continue their snow playing throughout the entire night; maybe so they can be at it early the next morning Individually, looked at from a close range, this little snow hopper has a very long face; and for a very good reason, for actually they are a very primitive order of Insects, Their ancestors lived, prob ably In snowbanks, many mil lions of years ago. Tolerance for Wtalhtr Perhaps the order has sur vived mainly because of their tolerance for any kind of weather, for they do all right for themselves even In the aummerllme. They don't know It, prob. ably wouldn't care if they did; but they are on the biological teeterboard: Neither they, nor any of the rest of 111 know for sure whether they are on the way up, or down. We don't know for sure how they got on the see-saw in the first place, or whether they arc going forward, moving slowly backward, or just standing itill. No wonder they seem so admits he's slightly confused. No wonder the snowfleas seems to have so much fun in a snowbank: maybe having their feet so cold and wet for several months out of each year has made them soft in the head. Or maybe they work on the theory that when you come to the end of the rope tie a knot and hang on.
