f 4 Plumley Leader in Shot Put Three ex-Medford high ath letes are among the leaders in track and field marks es tablished so far this season among schools of the old "northern division." Neil Plumley, Oregon State college, is tops in the shot put with 52 feet 6V4 inches. Jerry Close, University of Oregon, is second in the broad jump with 23-11, and Wilcey Winchell, U of O, is third in the half mile with 1:56.7. Jerry Stubblefleld, Oregon, ex-Ashland high, is second in the discus with 166-e. Blcck Tornado's Tennis Contingent Tips Ashland Black Tornado netters of Medford high cleared their first hurdle in the Southern Oregon conference tennis chase yesterday with a 5 to 2 victory over Ashland. The Medford crew goes to Klamath Falls on Thursday and to Grants Pass on Satur day to continue its league slate. University of Oregon, Eu gene - Oregon State's Beavers have taken the lead in the number of top marks register ed this spring in the first "northern division" summary of the young track and field season. Oregon State is tops in seven, Oregon leads in four others while Washington has two and Washington State two as the teams move into the second weekend of dual meet competition. Washington is host to Ore gon next Saturday and Idaho is at home for Washington State. Oregon State, which met both Washington and Fresno State over the week end, is idle. Edstrom, in both hurdles, and Oregon State's Amos Marsh in the sprints are the only competitors to be listed in more than one event. There will be time for prac tice firing. A perfect score in the Ore gon Journal telegraphic shoot was turned in at the Medford club last Sunday with Paul Culbertson, Frank Clogston and Henry Niedermeyer get ting 25 straights. The Journal shoot ended Sunday with Can- by as winner with 54 points. Medford tied for fourth in the shoot with McMinnville with 50 points. Cottage Grove and Eugene- shared second with 52. The shoot was held over six weeks with 27 teams participating. Each week each team was matched against several other teams. Canby won over 16 foes, tied 10 and lost to none. Medford had 12 wins, 14 ties and no losses. The top five clubs in the tourney all were unbeaten. Ashlanders Win Frosh Track Tilt Central Point Ashland high edged Crater 62 Vj to 59 Vi here yesterday in a ninth grade track and field event. The visiting Grizzlies took firsts in eight of the contests and Crater thinclads were winners in five events. Gary Wald of the Comets was a double victor, copping both dashes. Crater high's jayvees are to run at Eagle Point Thursday afternoon and the varsity will enter the Hayward relays at Eugene on Saturday. Medford won four of the singles and split the doubles yesterday as Coach Bob Huff dipped into his reserve roster. Tornado wins in the singles were Cummings over Bob Hcgdahl, 6-0, 6-2; John Shaw over John Mitchell, 6-1, 6-2: Dave Ryn over Ken Steven son, 6-4, 6-0 and Jim Randies over Jack Elder, 6-2, 6-0. For Ashland Ken Mitchell downed Booth Deakins 4-6, 6-2, 6-4. In doubles Randies and Henry Olson paired for Med ford to subdue Hegdahl and John Mitchell, 6-1, 6-0. No-Hitter Recorded By Lowery Medford High school's Bud Lowery hurled a no-hit, no- run game yesterday when the Tornado junior varsity trim' med the Talent varsity 8 to 0 in a baseball encounter at Tal ent. Lowery survived one rough spot in the sixth Inning when a walk, error and catcher's interference loaded the bases, The base on balls was the only one he yielded. He struck out batters 15 times In the seven inning ruckus. -The Tornado scored three times in the fourth inning on two bases on balls, singles by Scott Eaton and Lowery, a groundout and a passed ball In the sixth stanza two er rors, a base on balls, a hit batter and safeties by Craig Laurance and Jim Shaw ac counted for five runs. The win evened the score for an 18 to 3 loss to Prospect earlier. A barrage of 14 hits, high- lighted by Dick Wilson's home run, helped the Eagles. The homer, with the bags loaded came in the first inning when EP scored five of its runs, Singles were hit in this frame by Bill Pfeifer, Tony Eastman and Jim Nease. Eagle Point headed 8 to 0 going into the bottom of the sixth stanza. Three walks and hits by Terry Gardner, Lee Gitchell and Cliff Chapman then contributed to three Pros pect markers. The Eagles add ed one run in the seventh and Prospect rose up for four more before the side could be re tired. Cougar countes were on four walks and hits by John Rogers and Floyd Scaife, Dick Hertager, Eastman, Nease, Perdue and Pfeifer each had two hits for EP and Schaife and Gitchell each swatted two for Prospect. Coach Alex Peterson will take a five man traveling squad led by top man Bruce Merrill. John Root will play the second spot, Ken Miller the third, Ron Singler the fourth, and Dick Clark the fifth. First doubles team will be Merrill and Root while Sing ler and Miller will team on the second duo. The Raider netmen have a 3-3 record. Catchable-Size Trout Will Be Put in Rogue Portland -fflPD- The state game commission said today 2,200,000 legal sized trout would be released in Oregon streams and lakes during the coming angling season. Most of the trout will be rainbow. In addition, 520,000 year ling salmon and steelhead will be released. The latter fish will be freed during months when they can mi grate to the ocean without running gauntlet of angler's hooks. Of the total, the northwest region will get the largest plant, 1,224,000 fish. In southwestern Oregon, the Rogue and Umpqua rivers will each receive plants of 105,000 catchable sized rain bow trout, with additional plants of yearling chlnooks and steelhead scheduled for release. Lakes to receive the heav iest plants in the southwest include Loon with 10,000'rain bows, Floras with 12,500 of which 9,500 will be rainbows and the remainder cutthroats, Garrison with 9,500 rainbows and cutthroats, and Tenmile lakes, 24.500 divided about equally between rainbow and cutthroat trout. Red Raider Hitting Led By Munyon Ashland - Jess Munyon was the Southern Oregon college baseball player of the week as a result of his terrific series against the University of Nevada last Saturday. He shot his batting average to 636. Munyon garnered five hits in the two games, batted in five runs, and scored five of his own. He also played error less ball at third base. The Raider hot corner man is a sophomore from Glendale High school who also competes in football at Southern Ore gon. In his seven trips to the plate against Nevada, Munyon got on base every time. Francis Runnerup Eldon Francis is the runner- up to Munyon with a .600 average. He too, had a fine series at Nevada. Defensively the Raider center fielder hauled in 11 fly balls with catches in every mid-pasture area of the fenceless ball park. Jim Dietz is leading the club in stolen bases with three and has a .300 batting aver age while Francis has scored the most runs. six.
