MAIL TRIBUNI, Medfoid, Or. 1 A Monday, April 11, 160 Champion Will Keep His Putter (Editori Not - Arnold Palmar won tha Mastars golf championship Sunday by sinking birdia pulls on in final two holes. Ha da scribes how he won it in the following exclusive die patch for United Press In ternational.) By ARNOLD PALMER I960 Masters Champion (As Told to UPI) Auiiusta, Ga. - H'PIi - I take it back - I'm going lo keep that putter of mine after all. After the third round when I took 33 putts, I was think ing about giving it away. No chance of that now. I'm quite satisfied with it. thank you, My putting wasn't what you would call sensational in the final round, but those putts on the 17th and 18th holes made up for all the rest. I think I looked at every scoreboard on the course. By the time I got to the Mill I knew Ken Venluri already was in with a 283. I remom bcr sighing with a bit of relief that he hadn t birdicd any more holes than he did. . Probably the best break I got was when my long putt hit the pin on the 16th hole. I got my par on that hole and after my putt hit the pin, Billy Casper, who was playing with me, laughed and said. "Jeez, Arnie, you would've had a helluva putt out of that trap on the other side." That putt I miide on the 17th got me well again. I didn't stop to measure it but I know it was around 30 feet, maybe a little more. Thought of Birdie Now I was all tied wllh Venturi. When I slopped on the 18th tee my first concern was to get a par. Naturally, I gave some thought to a birdie also. I was rather careful with my drive. If anything, I made up my mind to go to the left where there is no trouble, rather than to the right where those trees can tangle you up. My tee shot was good and I then used a six-iron that left me about six feet from the cup. Sure. I was a little nervous. I fell the tension. The putt was slightly uphill and 1 look ed it over carefully. Man, I can't tell you how good It felt when I saw that Wilson Staff ball of mine rattle around down in the cup, I've heard it said that once you win a championship for the first time, the second one is sort of anti-climatic. You can't prove It with me. Win ning my second Masters title gave me just as much of a thrill as the first one. I think I'll take a little rest now and I may pick up the tournament again In New Od leans. If not, I'll definitely play in Houston. Right now, I just want to think about those Inst two holes awhile. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Augusta, Ga. IUPH - It took a championship finish to do it and Arnold Palmer, who had been scrambling all day, was up to it, so he won the 1960 Masters golf tournament. His victory wasn't easy. Going lo Ihe 17th hole, he was trailing Ken Venturi, sit ting in a room adjoining the Augusta National golf course, by one stroke. Venturi, lor nearly an hour had been ac cepting congratulations as the winner and as he said, "My jacket sure looked mighty green." But then Palmer sank a 30- foot birdie putt on the 17th green, which meant he need ed a birdie on the 18th to win, a par to tie. When he sank that pull on the 17th," said Venturi, "my Jacket started turning from green lo its natural color-gray." A green jacket goes to the Masters winner and Palmer got his second one when he pul his six iron second shot on the J81h hole six feet off the pin and sank the putt. Overcomes Pressure It was even a more dramat icc finish than last year when Art Wall birdied five of the last six holes to win it. "1 thought I did a pretty good job," said Wall, who had to sit this one out because of injuries and illness, "but for drama I'll take what Arnie did yesterday. 'He came through under pressure - championship pres sure. And only a champion can do that." Even the down-hearted Ven turi agreed. "There's only one thing I like about it," Venturi smiled through his disappointment.
