Santangelo (D N.V.) says that "12 new cases of conflict of Interest" Involving high Agriculture Department officials are under investiga tion. Santangelo, a member of the House Agricultural Ap propriations subcomml 1 1 e e, said the cases involved offi cials who are concerned with the government's grain stor age program. Santangelo said his sub committee was shocked to hear that Earl Corey, a for mer Agriculture Department official admitted he made big profits as a silent partner in a company which stored gov ernment grain. In all, Santangelo, said, "12 cases of conflict of interest are now under study." Questionnaires Sent An Agriculture Department spokesman said the depart ment sent a questionnaire in December to several thousand employees telling them to list their outside interests. As a result of this question naire, he said, there are 12 cases in which the department is making further inquiries. He said these were not neces sarily conflict of interest cases, nor were all 12 persons assigned to grain storage work. Santangelo brought up the matter in an interview by chairman Emanuel Celler (D- N.Y.) of the House Judiciary Committee. Celler said his committee now is drafting legislation to strengthen federal conflict of interest laws. VIIOO AUG. 24 H 14-24-51 -571 W-72-76-71 The Medical Why Does Diabetes Appear Lai in Life? Dozens of older persons ask why, if diabetes is an inherit able disease, did they have to wait until their later years to get it? There are a number of possible a n swers. Unfor tunately, w physicians do not yet know exactly how llll ALVAREZ or wny mo little insulin-making cells in the pancreas (big digestive gland which lives In the up per abdomen, back of the stomach) are damaged and perhaps eventually destroyed. Because hereditary diabetes can show up either early or late, one can find the disease in many a young person be fore his father or mother has gotten it. As a result, if one studies diabetes in children, one may find 20 per cent with a diabetic relative; but if one studies the disease In adults, one may find 55 per cent with an elderly parent with the diseasel Often, a doctor suspects that a person with a slight inborn tendency to diabetes developed it because he ate so much starch and sugar that he put much strain on his (born weak) pancreatic cells. Per haps, if he had dieted and re mained thin he would have escaped the disease. Tests made on the blood show that thousands of apparently well persons handle their sugar poorly, and hence are candi dates for diabetes. Oftentimes, when I see an old person with degenerating arteries who Is developing di abetes, I suspect that tiny ar teries in his pancreas have been plugging-up and leaving the insulin-forming cells with so little blood that they are unable to work well. Per haps, in most cases in which the son of a diabetic gets his diabetes only after he is 60, he started in life with a pan creas which was strong enough to last 30 years, but not 60 years. Occasionally I see a man of 60 who feels very old and tired, as if he were petering out, and then perhaps a most careful examination will show nothing definitely wrong with any part of his body. Perhaps he Is right in his hunch that he is Just getting old. Then In comes a peppy little old lady of 85 who says she is never tired. She may even be thinking of marrying againl Obviously, we human beings age at different rates; and the different organs In our bodies age at different rates. And probably most depends on what sort of parents we had - frail and short-lived, or rugged and long-lived. EXPERT SERVICE Radio Phono.
