SPORTS it was Sherry, Sherry everywhere. Alston didn't use him in the first game because Ted Kluszewski's two home runs helped the Sox romp, 11-0. But Larry pitched in the next three games, getting the win for the third. It wasn't his fault that the Dodgers blew the fifth, 1-0; all he did in that one was pinch-hit. He was there, though, when Johnny Podres tired after going the first part of the sixth game, and Larry held off the White Sox the rest of the way. Back home in Los Angeles, his young wife Sally was hugging their 15-month-old daughter, Suzanne, and think ing excitedly about what they could buy with a winner's share of World Series loot. It was a tremendous hour for the young man who under went six weeks of surgery in infancy to correct clubfeet caused from a fall his mother suffered just before his birth; who had worn braces until he was 12; and who still wears special orthopedic devices in his shoes. Larry would be hard pressed to calculate exactly how much money his pitching heroics were worth to him. The Dodgers paid him, as a doubtful rookie, only about $7,500 last season, but his World Series check came to a whopping $11,231.18. The ball club promptly signed him for 1960 at a figure that represented, they said, more than a 100 percent raise. He was the shining star of the winter banquet circuit, earning more than $10,000 for appearances and endorse ments. And, as the most valuable player in the Series, he was awarded a white sports car with red leather upholstery. HE accepted the car from singer Pat Boone on Pat's television show, then right afterward dashed to the New York garage where the car was stored. For all his im portance as a new national hero, he was like an impatient kid dreaming of his first ride on a new Christmas bicycle. It was almost midnight whenhegot-the -car, hutLarry wrapped his big hands around the wheel, tromped down on the accelerator, and took off for Yankee Stadium. He fiddled with the radio dial until he picked up Bobby Darin singing "Mack the Knife." "Man," he said, "this is my idea of livin'." When he swung the car back into the garage, the bored attendant came out to take it. "Hey," he said as the big fellow unwound himself from behind the wheel, "isn't that the car they're going to give to Larry Sherry?" Larry nodded. "That's it Nice, huh?" "I'll say," the attendant said. "That Sherry's got all the luck. I was just readin' in the paper that he's gettin' over 11.000 bucks in World Series money, and now he gets this heap, too. What a lucky guy." "Yeah," Larry Sherry said, walking away unrecognized but at peace with the world." He's a lucky guy, all right." But the truth is that he's made his own luck, and that's the best kind of luck for a man to have. - Carl Furillo and Larry, heroes of the World Series, with the "crystal ball" that helped them lead Dodgers on to victory.
