Ballerina' To Retire Moscow -fflPD- Galina Ulan- ova, hailed In the Soviet Union as the top ballet dancer of the world, hai retired as prima ballerina of the Bol slioi Theater at the age of SO. Still lithe and blonde after 32 years on the ballet stage, Ulanova retains the power to thrill audiences In Moscok, London, or New York. Her interpretations of three classic roles have become models for all dancers, and she has re mained in the top ranks of the world's ballerinas despite the challenge from younger dancers. Competent ballet sources said her retirement was effec tive April 1, but it applied only to her regular perform ances with the Bolshol group. She still will be called on to play special roles at the Bol shoi, and she may perform in recitals. Ulanova had been reported "retiring" for the past 10 years from the strenuous life as star of the ballet company. Audiences have packed her performances recently, ex pecting each one to be her farewell. But she continued to dance, and last year led the Bolshoi troupe on a world tour. Amer ican audiences cheered and clapped for encores during her performances in her three specialties: "Swan La k e," "Giselle," and "Romeo and Juliet." 1 Baptist Women To Hold Session Elizabeth White Cross circle will be hostess for a meeting of Women's Fellowship, First Baptist church, in the church annex Tuesday, April 12. Des sert will be served at 12:30 p.m. Mrs. Helmer Tinseth is circle chairman. Following the business meeting, devotionals will be given by Mrs. Ada Adams. Considered by many to be the best ballerina in the world, the star at the age of 50 is still with out peer. She performed in the United States last year while on a world tour, . (UPI Telephoto file picture) Members Hea r Review of Book, Story at Meeting Mrs. Rita Miller gave a talk on the "South Seas" for the meeting of the Wednesday Study club which was held April 6 at the Girls Commu nity club. She told of the adventures of the Norwegian explorer and archaeologist, Thor Hey erdahl, who wrote two books, "Kon-Tiki", the story of his 4,300 mile voyage to the Poly nesian Islands on a 40-foot balso raft and his second expe dition to Easter Island as told in "Aku-Aku". Mrs. Miller's talk was prin cipally about the author's sec ond expedition which took him to Easter Island called the loneliest Island in the world, where he attempted to solve some of the mysteries of its early civilization. Three distinct cultures are represented. The first was a very superior civilization which exceeded that of the early Incas of Peru. It Is be lieved that the earliest peoples came from Peru. The island is a dependency of Chile and was discovered on Easter Sunday, 1722. Only one ship a year visits this island and the people subsist on sweet potatoes, pork, beef and fish. Many Carvings The author writes at length about the many carvings which are gigantic figures in man's likeness, heavy as box cars and several stories high. The question is how were these five ton giants carved and moved about. The an cients had no metals. The carving was done in a crater then brought out and set up on burial terraces or plat forms 12 to 20 feet high. Then on top a hat or crown, about as heavy as two elephants, was placed. Sunday, April 10, 160 .9 Eagle Point HEC To Hold Dinner May 1 Eagle Polnt-The public din ner planned by the Eagle Point Home Economics club, previously set for Easter Sun day, has been postponed un til Sunday, May 1, it was an nounced at' a recent meeting of the club. Mrs. Paul Force was ap pointed historian for the club due to the resignation of Mrs. Ruby Stowell. The meeting was held at the home of Mrs. Edward Hayes with Mrs. Robert Bit terling co-hostess. .A visitor for the meeting was Mrs. Lottie Cingcade, Central Point. It was an nounced that Mr. and Mrs. Otis Jones will be moving to Portland in the near future. Mrs. Jones is a member of the club. Mrs. Frank Chamberlain, relief chairman, announced the help that had been given needy families in the commu nity. - . The meeting closed with a program of songs, readings, and quizzes presented by Mrs. Clifford Moore. The next meeting will be held April 27 at the home of Mrs. Stowell. and 150 figures about 30 feet high, some weighing as much as 50 tons each. Some of the craters on the island have deep blue lakes somewhat similar to Crater Lake. Humorous Story Mrs. L. V. Watkins read a humorous story entitled "Grandpa Botches Bachelor hood" by K. N. Hardin. Grandma was called away for three days due to an emergency and what happens during her absence is de scribed by the author as "a virile case of twitters, jitters, confusion, delusion and a faint suggestion of Indigestion".
