TO RECONSIDER Portland - The request by the Humble Oil company for oil and gas exploration rights on the Summer Lake water fowl management area in Lake county will be reconsidered by the Oregon game commis sion at a public hearing in Portland on April 22. Phil Schneider, state game direc tor, said the commission's de cision to review the lease ap plication came after the Hum ble Oil company proposed ad ditional safeguards which would restrict the company from conducting operations upon the surface of the more than 13,000 acres of waterfowl refuge and public shooting grounds. Bowling Lanes Baseball Club Slates Practice Medford Bowling lanes baseball squad will hold its first practice of the season on Sunday, April 10, at Cheney field at the south edge of Medford. Players are asked to report at noon and all men interested are Invited to turn out. The team will compete in the Rogue Valley league and will play its home games at the Veterans Administra tion Domiciliary field, White City. OSC Takes Ninth Tiff Corvallis - IUPD - Oregon State racked up Its ninth straight baseball victory Thursday by edging Linfield 6-4 with a two-run rally in the eighth inning. Bill Wagner singled home Brian Bailey and later scored himself on Jerry Droscher's single to provide the winning runs. Stan Williams' third straight single for Linfield in the fifth inning had tied the game at 4-4. Durham, ex-Ashland High school and ex-Southern Ore gon college, has been varsity coach at Illinois Valley High school, Cave Junction, for two years, tutoring the football, basketball and baseball teams, He coached at St. Mary's high In Medford from 1951 to 1954, then was in the Army for a time. James said that Bob My rick will move up to Junior varsity basketball coach, He has been freshman tutor. Durham will take the bas ketball reins from Jack Wood ward, who has been Pirate head hoop man for seasons and coached his Phoenix cag ers to the Oregon state B school crown in 1951. Wood ward will remain as head football coach and will handle freshman basketball. Durham will assist Woodward in foot ball along with Albert (Hap) Consbruck. SF Slates LA Tussles Bakersfield, Calif.-OIPD-The San Francisco Giants and the Los Angeles Dodgers were to meet here today in the first game of an exhibition farn storming tour through the San Joaquin valley. Both teams scored victories Thursday. The Giants defeat ed the Boston Red Sox, 4-2, in Phoenix, and the Dodgers outslugged the Chicago Cubs, 14-12, in Mesa. The Giants and Dodgers play at Fresno Saturday and Sacramento Sunday. The Giants open the National league season at Candlestick Park Tuesday against the St. Louis Cardinals. The Raiders will go to Paso Ti empo for the Northern Cali fornia Collegiate Invitational meet April 14-16. Three lettermen are on the roster from last year's Oregon Collegiate conference second place team. They are headed by medalist Gordie Marlatt, top golfer in the OCC last year. Bob Meyer and Phil Mon grain are the other monogram linksters who will be helped out by newcomers Phil Austin and Dick Brown. RVCC Schedules Golf Lessons Ron Caperna, Rogue Valley Country club pro, has an nounced plans for two series of golf lessons, one for begin ning ladies and one for junior boys and girls. Ladies lessons, a series of six, will be at 10 a.m. Tues days and Thursdays, starting April 12. Instructions for boys and girls, ages 9-11 years will be on four Saturdays in May, beginning on May 7. Lessons are free to women who are regular or social members and to sons and daughters of regular or social members of the country club. Instructions will be in fun damentals and golf ettiquette. 11 Woods, Water, Wildlife By Hank DeVos Spring is sprung and It cer tainly makes It difficult for man or boy to remain indoors, It Just isn't fit weather inside any building this time of the year. The weather has made that last little change which has most people working the soil in their flower beds or checking the sprouts in the vegetable garden. Then there are those who turn the soil but are far more interested in what the soil contains in the form of garden hackle. Spring is the best time for garden hackle, It seems the fish can have their heads turned by a worm far oftener than by any other Induce ment. Favorite lures may come and go but worms are the first and last choice of many fishermen. FAVORITE CHOICE Speaking of favorite choice, the local sportsmen and conservationists would probably pick the bureau of reclamation as the outfit that has don the most un intentional damage to wild life in this area. Not only have they provided us with on of the most ifcitv dr traps in th country, but ihy also build dams and it appears thy still don't know about th mi gratory fish runs in the Rogu and its tributaries. Recently thy hav com pleted th rebuilding of diversion dam across Bar creek which diverts watr for th Mtdford Irrigation district. Upon completion of th job. they very flc tivly closed all the bays in th dam to th extent that it was impossibl fox any liih to get by. Sine th creek has a run of stlhad going up to spawn at this time, quite a number of fish were being blocked at this point. RIVERSIDE bureau could b as aasily solved. 19S9 RECORD Many of the sportsmen of Oregon are acquainted with catch records, planting rec ords, size records and all those statistics that are on the posi tive side of our recreation from fishing and hunting. There is another side of the ledger and It also bears look ing into. It concerns the num ber of arrests which are made for fish and game law violations. In 1999 there were 896 ar rests made by 19 officers working in the seven south ern counties of Oregon. Of the total, 180 arrests were made in Jackson county and 72 ar rests were made in Josephine county. There were two offi cers working in each county. There is no local breakdown but over the whole state 93 per cent of the arrests re sulted In convictions. OUR RESPONSIBILITY The number of arrests may seem large or small de pending on th individual's point of view, but It must be admitted that the arrests were mad with a minimum of cooperation from thot who will profit th most from th deterrent effect of the arrests. Many of the ar rests are for minor viola lions which hav vary little effect on our wildlife and the reason for it is that those violations which do th most damage are the most difficult to prosecute. Poaching is widespread in this area and yet there ar few arrests mad because people think they are doing the right thing by protect ing those who poach. Every year there are any number of men and boys who ar consistent poachers of steelhead from Bear creek. School boys bring them horn to their fam ilies and th fish ar accept ed by th parents without any qualms as to the lesson they ar teaching thereby. Som boys brag quit loud ly as to th numbers of fish they catch each wk nd and how asy it is- to fool the cops. Those who consider youth to b th losponalbUUy of th adults may wondr whether or not adult (till accept this responsibility. Or do they hav lh naiv belief that whoever breaks th law Is only th concern of th police. If that is th case, w will never hav enough police. THE ANGLER'S LOG Those fishermen who Hate to fight the crowds covering the little bit of trout waters now open may find some sat isfaction in rowing around the 11 acre pond on the game commission's management area. Motors are not auoweu and the catfish are biting fair ly consistently. Some bass are being caught too. Klamath River - More ana more trout are showing In the catches on the California aide. A few straggler steelhead are still showing up and are de fended as still being "bright fish." The Oregon side Is pro ducing some good fishing and the fly fishermen are lucking out with bucktall coachman and an unnamed dark fly. Garden hackle Is the most popular fish-getter. Rogue River - Those who know how the salmon are bit ing aren't letting it out yet. The water conditions point to an optimistic week end but there Isn't any word on where the fish are. It would appear to be a good bet to try Ralney falls with a brass Hot Rod or two. THE OPTIMIST'S CORNER It is hoped that anyone who still doesn't understand the changes in fishing reg ulations and wants to know what the fishing prospects ar for this year will set Monday night asld as dat ed.
