"Peace can only be attained if the general tear of annihi lation is first removed," the visiting French leader told a rare joint session of the House of Lords and Commons. Usually only the Queen speaks to a joint parlia mentary session. By implication, de Gaulle rejected the attacks on West Germany made by Soviet Pre mier Nikita Khrushchev dur ing his recent tour of France. Germany With West "The peace France and Britain are striving to build should not widen divisions or poison wounds . including those suffered by the Ger mans, who were yesterday our enemies but today are a vital part of the West and our common ally," he said. In slow, deliberate French, de Gaulle delivered an elo quent plea on behalf of world disarmament. Dips Possible in Reports on Jobs, Sales, Income Washington -IUPH- Govern ment economists predicted to day there will be little to cheer about in their reports on business in March. The reports on Jobs, In come, sales and production, to be released in about 10 days, are expected to show little improvement and pos sibly some dips. Cold Responsible Unusually cold and snowy weather last month is respon sible, according to the ex perts. They also cited slow downs in steel and auto pro duction. Economists and top policy makers, such as Treasury Secretary Robert B. Ander son, say publicly that wltn most economic activity at or near record highs, business is good. But they acknowledge pri vately that business growth in the next six months or so cannot be foretold until re sults for April and May are in hand. Outlook Would Be Gloomy How business fares this month and next will make or break forecasts for a spring spurt. Without a spurt the economic outlook for the next half year will be pretty gloomy. Top administration officials are aware that there has been a lack of pep in the economy In recent weeks. They think it would be premature to con clude this means a recession or that business needs a boost from the government. They say basic review of govern ment policy will be necessary only if the economy worsens markedly. Medford Regiona ANTI-RED BILL Washington-(UPD-Rep. Fran cis E. Southerners in Last Ditch Move on Civil Rights Washington (LTD- Southern senators staged -a last-ditch fight today for a modification of the civil rights bill which even administration support ers conceded might have merit and speed passage of the measure. Sen. Richard B. Russell (D- Ga.), leader of the Southern bloc, said the disputed section would "dlscrlmate against white voters because they could not register as late as some Negroes. Russell called the provision written into the bill by the House, a "monsterous" section which demands correction He told newsmen he thought his plea would "appeal to the sense of fairness of the Senate if they understood it." Expedite Final Action The Senate scheduled a vote today on an amendment by Sen. Allen J. Ellender (D-La.) to eliminate the voting refer ee section of the bill. Ellen der's proposal was expected to be defeated. Senate GOP Leader Ever ett M. Dirksen (111.) said he would confer with Attorney General William P. Rogers about Russell's arguments. He said any modification "would take the steam out of the de bate" and expedite final ac tion on the bill. Dirksen said he felt Rus sell's request was "an honest one" and not a "dilatory tactic." 1 COMPARE FLAVOR! COMPARE PRICE!
