Rogue Relay Meet Here on Saturday Track and field season will go into lull gear here on Sat urday, April 9. Medford High school and Medford Klwbnis club will be hosts for the 21st annual Rogue relays. Tie For Fourth Dick Skufca of Cleveland and Earl Johnson of Chicago moved into a three-way tie for fourth place in the singles with Identical scores of 693, matching the series rolled by Vernon Pllchta of Musk'gon, Mich., on March 26. George Wong and Tom Fukuda of Detroit collaborat ed for 1,279 and eighth place in the doubles. The only change In the open team division came as the Plains Electric team of Plains, Pa., rolled 3,006 to claim seventh place. After a weak 968 start, the team got stronger, finished with 995 and 1,043. Walter Krywickl sparked the team to the sev enth 3,000-series of the 28-day old tournament when he roll ed 647. math Falls, Crater and Med ford. They make up the South ern Oregon conference. Marshfield, an entry for several seasons, will not have a team here this time. The Pirates return to the Spike Leslie relays at Coquille. Grants Pass will come seek ing its third straight victory in the meet and will defend with a strong contingent. The Cavemen retired a trophy in 1959 with a third leg on the award. Twelve events, six track and six field, make up the relay program. The Rogue meet has a sta ture in ita own right but also has served as a warmup, an nually, for the statewide Hay ward relays a week later in Eugene. NYAC Titlist In Wrestling San Franclsco-flJPD-The New York Athletic club captured the National AAU free-style wrestling crown late Friday night, winning three firsts in Individual ocmpetition. Runners-up were the San Francisco Olympic club, sec ond; Oregon State college, third; Multnomah Athletic Club of Portland, fourth; U.S. Air Force, fifth; and Mexico, sixth. Bill Kerslake, Cleveland, Ohio, won the heavyweight crown for the ninth consecu tive year by beating Dale Lewis, NCAA champion from Oklahoma City. The AAU wrestlers contend ed yesterday and today for Greco-Boman championships. S an Francisco-iUPD - Wres tlers from Oregon won two thirds and a fourth place here Friday night in the finals of the AAU championships. Mils Tamura, Oregon State, drew with Hiroaki Aokl, New York Athletic club, in the finals and finished third in the 114 pound class. In the 125-pound class Ron ald Bessemer of the Multno mah Athletic club of Portland finished third and Jerry Perez of Oregon State was fourth. Little Rogue Track Encounter Phoenix Event Next Saturday While the big schools of the area are having their tradi tional track and field engage ment, five of the smaller schools will contend in the Little Rogue relays at Phoe nix high. Guests of the Pirates for the meet will be St. Mary's of Medford, Illinois Valley of Cave Junction, Eagle Point and F)gue River. St. Mary's Is the defending tltlists. The Crusaders nicked Phoenix by a half point last year. The Little Rogues are pat terned after the Class B and C divisions of the Hayward relays at Eugene in which the schools will compete next week end. Trophy in the Little Rouges must be won three, times for a' school' to ' retire It. Eagle Point has two legs on the hardware and Phoenix and St. Mary's each one. Baity Ache Wins Florida Derby Hallandale, Fla. - (UPD -Bally Ache, who lost one of five $100,000 races to Vene tian Way last year, would not be denied Saturday when held on for a nose victory over his rival in the $120,600 Florida derLy at Gulfstream park. Bally Ache, who also won the $100,000 Flamingo Stakes at Hialeah this winter, emerged the Florida cham pion among the three-year-olds. His victory Saturday may also send him into the Kentucky Derby as a favor ite, now that the 1959 two-year-old champion, Warfare, is sidelined with injury. TRAINER DIES San Mateo, Calif. Braves Quit on Avila Contract Brandcnton, Fla. - (DPD -General Manager Johnny Mc Hale of the Milwaukee Braves said today that he has dis continued contract negotia tions with Bobby Avila. "We'll wait until the start of the season on April 12 and then put him on the retired list," said McHale. "We just can't reach a salary agree ment." PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Fort Myers, Fla. -UPD- Dan ny Murtaugh isn't conceding a thing to the Dodgers, Braves and Giants, but it looks like his Pittsburgli Pirates lack the pitching and bench depth to overtake the three big clubs of the National league. He isn't as optimistic as he was a year ago at this time. At that time the manager of the Pirates gave his team "a fine chance to win." Today, he on ly says they have a chance. His club finished fourth In 1959 and the main strength they have added since then is getting outfielder Gino Cimoll from the Cardinals and catcher-third baseman Hal Smith from the Athletics. But to get Cimoll, he had to give up one of his four starting pitchers, Ronnie Kline. Three Established Starters That left the Pirates with only three established starters -Vern Law, Bob Friend and Harvey Haddix. Law had the best record of the three-win- nine 18 while losing nine Haddix was 12-12 and Friend slIuDed to an 8-19 mark. Behind them, in relief, he has one of the best in the business in little Roy Face, who won 18 while losing on ly one last season. But after those four his pitching is a question mark. As for his fourth starter. Bennle Daniels, 7-9 last sea son, has the inside track "If he makes it, it will be a big help," says Murtaugh, adding, however, that "we have to find others, too." beveral To Choos. From He hopes to find them from among George Witt, who didn't win a game last season while losing seven: Joe Gib bons, 16-7 with Columbus; Jim umoricM, 14-8 with Salt Lake City; Tom Cheney, 0-1 with the Cardinals and 5-8 with Omaha in 1959; Al Jackson, 15-4 with Columbus; Don Gross, 1-1 with Pittsburgh; and Ron Blackburn, who was 1-1 with the Pirates and 4-1 with Columbus. The rest of the Pirate club is set with the exception of one outfield spot and the third-string catching job. Bob Skinner in left and Ro berto Clemente in right are sure of outfield berths but Bill Virdon, the regular center fielder last year, could lose out to Cimoll. Smoky Burgess will be the first string catcher with Smith spelling him. Danny Kravltz has been hitting the ball hard in exhibition games. Denver -(UPD- Triumphs on Triday night put the NCAA University All-Stars and the Peoria, 111., Caterpillars into the Saturday finals of the Olympic trials. Championship prize is a summer trip to Rome to rep resent the United Slates in the Olympic Games. The NCAA Stars - and Os car Robertson of Cincinnati university, Jerry West of West Virginia and their teammates are all true stars-drubbed a strong Akron Goodyear team, 103-88 And the Peoria Cats put down the NAIA small college All Stars, 89-68. Robertson and West, work ing together as If they had been doing so all season, led the University All Stars to a 28-12 lead, scoring 17 points between them, in 10 minutes. Then 6-11 Walt Bellamy of Indiana and 3-11 Jimmy Dar row of Bowling Green took charge of the offense while Robertson and West, each charged with three fouls, re laxed on the bench. Akron was behind 51-50 at halftlme, having made some headway against the colle gians' second platoon. But coach Pete Newell of Califor nia sent Robertson and West back into action as the second half began. In just six minutes, the Big O and the wily West had the Goodyears' bash settled, 70- 54. With seven minutes to play, the AU Star lead was 88-70. Robertson scored 20 point, West 22, and Bellamy 17. Peoria's National Industrial leaffuo club was down, 1-7, before Tom Meschery and Bob i Boozer got them going against I the small college team, Mes- i chery's follow shot at the sev- and a half minute mark put the Cats permanently ahead, 11-9.
