Funeral Director Named at Memory Gardens Mortuary Richard H. Frey, formerly of Roseburg, is now associated with Memory Gardens Mor tuary as funeral director and embalmer, William S. Ferris, manager, has announced. A graduate of San Francis co Mortuary college, Frey was born in Portland and attend ed schools in Portland, includ ing Vanport college, now Portland State. After Mortuary college graduation, he was affiliated with the Chapei of Roses tn Roseburg, where in 19S8 he was named assistant manager. He received his license in em balming in January, 1957, and in funeral directing in January, 1958. He is a member of the Rose burg Junior Chamber of Com merce, of which he was first vice president in 1958, and re ceived the outstanding project chairman award in 1958 and this year. Frey also is a member of the Roseburg Elks lodge, a member of the board of direct ors of the Douglas County chapter of the National Foun dation, and was Roseburg city chairman in tha 1958 March of Dimes. He has been Douglas coun ty deputy coroner since 1958. Frey is married and has four children. They live at 601 Woodstock ave., Med ford. Loren Sawyer, Medford, division training officer. Gene Shelton, aviation ord nanceman, Ashland, and Louis Haussler, shipfitter, Medford, were advanced to first class petty officers. New second class petty offi cers are Paul Zeleznik, Med ford, David Dickerson, Ash land, both yeoman typists, and Pete Banco, aviation boatswainmate, Medford. New third class petty offi cers are Ron Remsen, radio man, Butte Falls; Virgil El bert, fire controlrnan, Central Point, and Tom Merriman, radarman, Medford. Three-Story House Which Burned Was Built by Pioneers The historic, huge, three- story house which burned on Colver rd. near Talent on Wednesday night was erected by Ell K. Anderson, who set tled in the Rogue River val ley in 1852. There are some questions as to the exact date that the pioneer home, a Southern Oregon- landmark, was built. A picture of the house, on Diabetes Subject Of Television Panel Diabetes will be discussed on "Adventures in Medicine" at 1:30 o'clock this afternoon over KBES-TV. The series of bi-weekly programs on health is sponsored by the Jackson County Tuberculosis and Health association and pro duced in cooperation with the Jackson County Medical So ciety. Diabetes is sometimes re ferred to as the "great imita tor" because the symptoms may appear anywhere in the body and may mimic other diseases. It is estimated that there are more than 1 million known cases in the country, and at least another million who do not know they have it, the association said. Appearing on the medical panel will be Dr. Ralph E. Hibbs, Medford, and Dr. John R. Reynolds, Ashland, special ists in diagnosis and internal medicine, and Dr. Malcolm Byers, Medford, general prac titioner. Records at the museum tell of Anderson and his broth er, J. Firman AnCerson, lo cating on adjacent donation land claims near the present sight of Talent in 1852. Their log cabin was erected on the line between the two proper ties in order that each might live on his own land. After EH Anderson married Elizabeth Myers in 1856 he built a more pretentious house and it became a center of pioneer hospitality. Museum files say that this home was succeeded by the present one. Drawn to California Anderson, born near Bloom Ington, Ind., Dec. 20, 1826, was drawn to California by the Gold Rush in 1849. After coming to this valley he went to the Willamette valley for seed and grain and in the fall of 1852 plowed a small patch of ground and planted wheat and oats. The next year he planted 12 acres of wheat. This crop was sold for $8 per bushel. .Then, Anderson and his brother brought the floor mill at Ashland, the first erected in southern Oregon. They paid $5 per bu.'hel and sold the flour for 15 cents per pound. Ell Anderson also engaged In the merchantile business at Ashland, had woolen mill interests and owned the Forty Ine, Davenport and Falrview Mines. He was a pioneer in irrigation and built the first ditch from Ashland creek three miles above the city Ashland. He served on the board of county commission ers.
