Mary T.-I don't want to share my room with Granny! Mrs. L. IV-I'm disappointed in Mary. Mary T.-I am lit and so miserable at home I feel like running away. Until last year I had to share my room with my kid brother. Finally we moved into a bigger apart ment and I got a room of my own. Now what happens? My grandmother comes to live with us anji I have to have her in my room! I spent so much time fixing ur my room just the way I wanted it. Everything was so perfect. Now it has alt been rearranged to make room for Granny. I have no privacy. Granny doesn't like the rec ords I play, the way I sit when I do my homework, etc. I can't stand it! I 'don't why Granny can't stay in Cliffs room. He's only 8 and he's hardly ever in it. But Mom ays I have to put up and shut up. Mrs. L. TV-Having my mother live with us is hard on every one of us. She is el derly and ailing and - just couldn't be left "alone any longer I was the only one who could possibly take care ol her so I'm elected and that's that. I am very disappointed in Mary. She always adored her grandmother and used to beg her to stay overnight. Now she gets irritated at every thing the poor woman says to her. Once or twice she was so disrespectful that I slapped her. " I have tried to teach Mary tobe unselfish and thought ful of others. The way she is acting I feel I have been a failure as a mother. She does not seem to have one tender spot in her heart for her own grandmother. My mother feels it too and says I've spoiled Mary. ... The Council: Of course, we can't excuse disrespect to Grandmother, but we can see where Mary has had things rather "tough At just the age when she has come to luxur iate in her own privacy, she is given close overseer, who is far removed from her own budding tastes and ideas. It is also possible that Gran ny is really difficult to get along with. If she is both old and ailing and suddenly placed in a position of total dependence in her daughter's home, she can't be in very good spirits. She probably is entirely aware of how much she "has upset Mary's plans and this gives her no cause for joy. She is Jikely to take out some of her miseries about herself in criticism of Mary. And this doesn't help the situation by any means. In addition, Mary is arriv ing at the age when she may experience a good deal of emo tional antagonism toward her mother. It is quite likely that she conceals some of those, feelings even from herself and transfers them to her grand mother - against whom she fe" she has a reasonable be? . ' - . Jaear up with a situation she herself finds difficult, Mrs. L. T. is being a bit too harsh on Mary. It is a way of silenc ing her own inner protest. But it might help matters if she unbent a little and expressed some sympathy to Mary. She should let her daughter know that her problem is under stood and that she will do all in her power to help. She might even consider Mary's suggestion of putting the el derly woman in the boy's room for a time. At 8, he is unlikely to feel the pressure of another person as much as his sister. That is why they were so impressed when their chief of police, Ray Sheffer, recently was nominated for one of the 10 outstanding young men of the nation by the United States Junior Chamber of Com merce. Sheffer was among the finalists and missed out only during the last go-round. Sheffer polices one of the few "24 hour" towns in Amer ica. The bars and the gam bling casinos never close. His job is made doubly tough by the fact gambling attracts all sorts of hangers-on. But the Las Vegas chief is well able to take care of any type character who might think the community is open territory for crime. He stands well over six feet tall, weighs about 200 pounds and looks like an Ail-American tackle. Youngest Chief He is the youngest chief of police in any major city in the United States just Hear ing 36. One of Sheffer's trade marks is his eyes. They are sort of hazel, but the pupils are as black as night and look like the muzzles of .22 caliber revolvers as they peer out from under bushy eyebrows. He appears to be looking right through you, even when he is in a light mood and off duty. Many criminials have broken under the stares of those eyes. The chief came up through the ranks, so he knows what his men have to and can do. He is the type who leads his police department rather than driving the members. He never calls them to do some thing he would not do or has not done himself. This is why morale is high in the depart ment. Sheffer has , been in the forefront of battles to curb narcotics, juvenile delin quency and to make better of ficers of the members of his department. Change in Drug Law Sheffer, almost single-handedly, brought about a change in the state narcotic law which now provides stif fer penalties up to life imprison ment for dope peddlers and pushers. The Nevada legisla ture took his word, almost ex clusively, and passed, with only a scattering of dissent ing votes, the bill he had pre pared. A Sheffer project, the' Las Vegas Police Academy, where rookie officers are trained in police work before joining the force, has gained wide recog nition. Originally, instituted for Los Vegas officers only, the academy has drawn students from all sections of the state. There is every possibility the academy will become state supported and open to police officers and sheriffs' deputies from all parts of the state. Russia Possibly Building Bomb Washington- (UPD -Roy W. Johnson, former director of the Defense Department's Space Planning Agency, testi fied Wednesday that Russia may be building an A-bomb or H-bomb that could be put into orit and be commanded to drop on an earth target. Studies in Progress Johnson made the statement in accusing the administra tion of dragging its feet on the Saturn big booster proj ect, which he termed essen tial to development of counter-measures for this and oth er pressing space threats.
