A Thursday, March 3 1 , 1 960 Chessman Loses Another Round San Rafael, Calif. - (UPD -Caryl Chessman lost another round in his 12-year legal bat tle to escape the gas cham ber but his attorneys said to day they would" continue the . fight. Superior Judge Jordan Mar tinelli rejected a petition for a writ of habeas corpus Wed nesday Snd (refused to stay Chessman's ninth date with the gas chamber, now sched uled for May 2. Attorney George T. Davis said he would file an original petition for a writ of habeas corpus with the District Court of Appeals or the State Su preme Court by Monday, if possible. He said it would con tain basically the same allega tions as those argued Wednes day. Davis added that, if neces sary, he would go to the U.S. Supreme Court which has denied Chessman appeals on nearly a score of occasions. Wernmark Submits His Resignation The resignation of K. C. (Swede) Wernmark as organ izatiiSial chairman for the Jackson county Democratic central committee has been accepted by the central com mittee's executive committee. Wernmark's resignation was submitted last week to be come effective April 1, but it was refused and the chair man agreed to continue the position for an additional 30 d$ys He said h wished to resign because of business and per Qsonal reasons, as well as dis agreement on policy matter. It was unmanned and narrowly missed scores of school children and dam Western Unions Map Cooperation San Francisco - (UPD - The International Longshoremen's and Warehousemen's Union and the Western Conference of Teamsters met here Wed nesday to set up a program of permanent close cooperation. Both unions have been ex pelled from the AFL-CIO, the teamsters for corruption and the ILWU for Communist in fluence. The once bitter com petitors resolved to combine forces in handling their prob lems and settle disputes by a joint committee. Especially -in operation of juke boxes, pin-ball games and cigarette vending ma chines, the committee said, the . industry has been victi mized by ."an astounding num ber ; of racketeers", who use "subservient," labor union locals as their instrument of domination. "During the past two dec ades almost every infamous criminal in America has held interest in . some segment of coin machine operations," the committee, said. -- - The committee made- the statements in the last install ment of an 883-page report on its three-year investiga tion of labor and management misdeeds. This was to have been the panel's final report, but a dispute over how to continue its work might give the committee a new lease on life. : . ' Attack Teamsters' Leaders In today's report the com mittee levelled new charges against its primary union target - the giant Teamsters Union. Describing how union labels and union activities have been used to aid "criminal domina tion" of coin machine ven tures, the committee said the Teamsters Union "has become the preferred affiliation for such racket locals" because it controls deliveries to most locations. Hoffa and his close friend, Bert Bren nan, received a total of $6,000 from the payroll of a Detroit juke box local. The commit tee said it put "little cred ence" in grand jury testimony that the money was repay ment of a loan. The committee also criti cized the activities of William E. Buffalino, nominated by Hoffa Wednesday to serve on the court-appointed board of monitors which is overseeing a clean-up of the teamsters. Much Money Involved In a statement released with the - report, . Chairman John L. McClellan (D-Ark.) said the nation's 500,000 juke boxes "have brought in over $300 million in cash over each of the last several years." " McClellan said the prom inence of Buffalino, whom he described as "a teamster of ficial, in the racket-infested coin machine business in De troit," only shows the "incon gruity" of Buffallno's nomin ation by Hoffa to the moni tors. . The committee said, "crim inals have used captive labor union locals as weapons to dominate various parts of the industry. They have had little trouble in obtaining locals for their own use." It added, '"management has knowingly used criminals to increase its sales. It has con doned the resulting violence and mayhem as a liability of the business." Y.-IUPD-A gaso line explosion killed five per sons Wednesday night at a downtown service station where firemen were checking reports of a gas leak. Three victims were fire men. Two firemen received minor injuries and a hospital reported at least one other person was injured. The cinder block station was torn apart by the blast from an underground fuel storage tank, and windows were shattered throughout the area. A movie theater next door escaped damage because of its reinforced concrete walls, a fire official told United Press International. A usual week night audience of 300 to 400 persons was in the theater, but there was no panic. The explosion also ruptured the natural gas feeder line running to the station. It was permitted to burn until fire men could dig through the rubble and find the cutoff valve. The dead were identified as station owner Walter Ock enfels; fire Lt. Alfred Murphy, fireman John F. Searing, 27, and Anthony T. Contrera, and station employee John Bell, all of Auburn. U. S. SETTLE CLAIMS Washington-(UPD-The United States has agreed to settle long-standing claims against Romania for about 41 cents on the dollar and to exchange information on possible trade expansion. In an agreement signed here Wednesday, the United States accepted $24, 526,370 for claims by Ameri cans which the U.S. foreign claims settlement commission valued at $6 million. Medford Firm Low Bidder on Lights Trowbridge and F 1 y n n Electric company was the ap parent low bidder for installa tion of traffic signals in Grants Pass at Sixth and I sts., and Seventh and H sts., according to the Oregon Highway commission. Trowbridge and Flynn's bid was $6,780. Contracts will be awarded April 21 for the job, which is one of 26 projects for which bids were opened this week.
