California Man Arrested in City Medford police arrested a self-employed truck driver yesterday on a charge of lar ceny of an auto, following his a'pprehension in a car report ed stolen from a lot at Skin-ner-Buick-Cadillac, 14S South Riverside av. Daniel Louis Minerva, 31, of Brooklyn, N.Y., was stopped in the car by a city police officer about 2:15 ajn., at the intersection of Ninth st. and Central ave., about 15 minutes after the car was re ported siolen. H admitted he took the car from the lot, according to po lice, and said he did it be cause he wanted to find some friends of his. They said he was cooperative following his arrest. Minerva told police he had driven a truck to Medford from San Jose, Calif., a week ao and has been waiting here for further instructions. He was lodged in the coun ty jail. The hearing follows an an nouncement Tuesday night that preliminary steps have been completed for an attempt to save Chessman by taking his case to the people. According to Robert Brad ford, a Monterey,- Calif., writ er, Secretary of State Frank Jordan has assigned a title for a petition to put on the November ballot an initiative measure to abolish capital punishment. But it would be necessary that the petition obtain 420, 000 signatures by June 18. Professional petition passers doubted that enough money and volunteers could be found to get signatures of all those voters. ' : Before Judge Martinelli, Chessman's attorney's will only argue that their current demand for a writ of habeas corpus deserves a full-scale hearing. Chessman is scheduled to die May 2, and such a full- scale hearing might result in a stay of his ninth execution date. Corinne Calvert Awarded Divorce Santa Monica, Calif.-rtJPD- French-born Actress Corinne Calvet was awarded a di vorce Tuesday from actor Jeff Stone on her testimony that Stone's conduct was ruining her health. "Everybody in town knew he was leaving me before I did," said the shapely actress. She said he screamed at her. "It made me so nervous I had to go on what you say . . . tranquilizers." Miss Calvet, previously wed to actor John Bromfield, was awarded $150 monthly sup port for her son, Robin Jr.,' 4, and 10 per cent of Stone's earnings over $20,000 a year. The couple was married in 1955. Hearing Scheduled On Handicapped Washington - (DPD - A House education subcommittee said today it has invited more than 600 persons from nine north western states to attend hear ings at Portland, Ore., April 11 and 12 on rehabilitation and education of handicapped persons. About 60 witnesses are ex pected to testify on the re gion's most urgent needs in the field of special education and rehabilitation. Two-Day Strike at Vandenberg Ended Vandenberg AFB, Calif.-(DPD-A two-day strike by 3,000 civilian workers at this oper ational base ended Tuesday night, allowing work to re sume today on Atlas and Ti tan launching pads. v Philco Corp., one of the private contractors employed by the Air Force here, agreed to withdraw 24 to 30 workers the International Brotherhood of Electrical Workers said were being paid below the prevailing wage scale. Philco said talks with the union had become deadlocked and the disputed workers were being withdrawn so vi tal work on the intercontinen tal ballistic missile pads could be continued. African Police Seize Leaders Johannesburg, South Africa OjPD Police seized at least 100 opposition political lead ers, including some whites, today in raids aimed at crack ing resistance to the South African government's segrega tion policies. fculu Chief Albert Luthuli, president of the South Afri can branch of the African Na tion Congress (ANC) was among those taken into cus tody in the raids here and in Pretoria. The raids were the biggest crackdown on political opposi tion leaders since the so-called "treason" arrests of 156 per sons in December, 1956. Arrested with Luthuli was John Brink, chairman of the Pretoria, branch of the Lib eral Party, which has repre sentatives in Parliament and which hitherto had been im mune from such police crack downs. A white minister, the Rev. Mark Nye, was arrested as he went to the police station to arrange an attorney for Luth uli, who was supposed to be ment to his farm in Natal serving five year's banish state. Washington Picks Site for Prison Olympia, Wash.-(UPD-A 500- acre tract four miles north west of Shelton was selected bv the state Tuesday as th site of a proposed $8,500,000 medium-security prison. The site, to be donated by the City of Shelton, was chos en by Garrett Heyns, direc tor of institutions, from a list of 29 bidders. The 1959 State Legislature authorized the prison and di rected Heyns to select a site and develop plans for con struction. A start on the proj ect is contingent upon the willingness of the 1961 Legis lature to provide funds. .
