Mary's High School All through the March 19 week end, members of the newly formed "Fix-It and Bun-It" club were busy con structing two tennis courts on the school grounds. Mike Dug gan brought a post hole dig ger, set concrete supports for the posts, then welded the pipes for the nets. Bill Smith supplied and manned the com pressor and paint gun for lin ing the courts. Almost before the paint was dry the courts were be ing used. Members of the girls' physi cal education class were so appreciative of the club's la bors that they treated the boys to cake and ice cream. Boys were Mike Duggan, Jim Dupray Jim Valentine, Bill Smith, Don Rausch, Bernard Boat and Don Fruitt. On March 22, 23 and 24, two American problems stu dents, David Hanawalt and Thomas Hersant, conducted a survey that would compare the political knowledge of Medford to that of the aver age American city. The boys divided Medford into two dis tricts, the west side to be sur veyed by David, and the east side to be surveyed by Tom. Each boy visited an average of 25 families for each of the three nights making a total of 150 families visited by the two students. Each family was asked eight questions dealing with politicians, the Civil Rights bill, and Medford's views on segregation. The re sults of the survey were pre sented to the class on Thurs day after each student in the class was given the same questions that were presented to the families. The survey showed that 82 per cent of those interviewed know the mayor of Medford; 88 per cent know the gover nor and his party; 69 per cent remembered Senator Wayne Morse; and 52 per cent knew of the recent appointment of Justice Hall Lusk. Congress man Porter was the most widely known representative, known to 45 per cent. Mrs. Edith Green was next with 31 per cent; Walter Norblad had 15 per cent and Al Ull- man had 9 per cent. rne pon snowed that 54 per cent are willing to accept a Negro family into their neighborhood. Only 18 per cent were definitely against such a family; 13 per cent were undecided; and the re maining 15 per cent offered no comment. PASS NARCOTICS BILL Washington -(CPIL- The Sen ate passed and sent to the House Monday a bill designed to bring the nation's narcotics laws up to date. The measure would provide a system of li censes and manufacturing quotas on both natural and synthetic narcotics for all U.S. producers. I am sure that in doing this, the doctor meant to be kind and wanted to reassure and encourage the patient. But, as the man says, "Even with the nicer name for my little stroke, I am still sick, and I can't work." Sometimes the taking of two tablets a day of Lipoidine will help; and oft en, in a few months, some of the symptoms will clear up. I am sorry there is no good medicine that will quickly re pair the damage to the brain. I dislike the love so many of us doctors have f or Jthe long, the technical, and the Greek or Latin word, when we could so easily use the or dinary Anglo-Saxon, short and well-known word. A vascular accident simply suggests that a blood vessel in the brain either ruptured or plugged up with a clot. A temporary ischemia means that the doc tor suspects that a blood ves sel went into a spasm for a few minutes. Many experts are not sure that such spasms take place; and expert stud ents of the brains removed at autopsy from persons who died from a long series of little strokes, show me these brains speckled with scores of little black spots, every one of them made by a clotted ves sel. Certainly when, after a supposed "temporary ischem ia," the patient is never again able to walk comfortably, I know that whatever he had-it was anything but "tempor ary." To the end of my days I probably will prefer simple English speech, even when I am lecturing to a large audi ence of distinguished physi cians. As Hemingway once said, he knew all the long words, and he knew how and where to use them; but, like me, he likes the short words better. The father and a 6-year-old son escaped with se rious burns. The dead were identified as Mrs. Maria Loperena, 30, her daughter Yvonne, 8, and infant son, Dennis, 7 months. Juan Loperena,- 28, fled down a fire escape with his son, Milton, in his arms after the rest of the family was cut off by the flames, which ap parently broke out in the Loperena apartment while everyone was asleep.
