Senators Have Pascual Pius Muscle; Little Else (This is the sixth of the dispalches on -he I960 pros pects of the major league clubs.) By LEO H. PETERSEN UPI Sports Editor Orlando, Fla. (UPt The Washington Senators have muscle and Camilo Pascual. They have little else. But that muscle and Pas cual could combine to get them out of the American league cellar, a spot on which the Senators have had a lock in recent years. "We should play .500 ball," says Manager Cookie Lava getto. "I don't know where that would place us, but it would be out of the cellar." With clubs like Kansas City and Boston in the league, no one vould fault Lavagetto on that thinking. 4-Man Muscle Trust He has that muscle in four men-third baseman Harmon Killebrew, who hit 42 homers last season; outfielders Jim Lemon, who drove 33 out of the park and Bob Allison, who hit 30 jackpots, and Roy Sievers, probably the best long ball hitter of them all. He wound up with only 21 homers in 1959-not bad for tbjj average player but sub standard for Sievers. Roy was hampered by injuries last season, but looks like the old Sievers this spring. Put these four men with Pascual, whom many baseball men regard as the best pitch er in the business, and you can understand why the Sen ators think there are better Cats Take AAU Title 9enver-(UPD - Seattle's Buc- hafl Bakers took third place in the National AAU basket ball tournament by defeating the Phillips Oilers of Bartles- ville, Okla., 82-73, Saturday night. ThePeoria Caterpillars nail etj, down the tournament title and a chance to try out for the U. S. Olympic team by downing Akron Goodyear 115-99. Jerry Constantino College Champion Toledo, Ohio - (UPD - Mid west bowlers walked off with most of the honors Sunday night in the second annual intercollegiate bowling cham pionships held here in con junction with the ABC tour nament. Jerry Constantino of Brad ley university was a double winner, sharing the two-man crown with Eugene Wodka of the University of Illinois, and taking the all - events cham pionship with an 1189 total. The singles title was won by Jim Nixon of the Univer sity of Minnesota with a 604. The doubles combination of Constantino and Wodka bowl ed a creditable 1249 with the Bradley star hitting 655 and Wodka 594. In the singles, Constantino had 534. OSC Trounces Arizona State Tempe, Ariz. -d'PD- Oregon State, which dropped a track meet to Arizona earlier last week, defeated Arizona State 80-51 here Saturday. Amos Marsh of OSC won the 100-yard dash in 9.6 and the 220 in 21.5 and Darrell Horn of the Beavers won the broad jump with 23 feet 6 ' inches and the low hurdles with a time of 24.1. times ahead. Every club in the league is making overtures for Pas cual, but President Calvin Griffith, who has been known to change his mind when the exchequer runs low, says they are wasting their time. "They'd run me out of Washington if I traded him," he explains. Pascual won 17 while los ing 10 with the Senators last season. Among his victories were six shutouts. The batters he pitches against say he has the best curve ball in the league. Lavagetto doesn't have too much back of Pascual except Pedro Ramos, a 13-game win ner last year. Cookie is high on rookie Jim Kaat, a left hander who won only eight games with Chattanooga. Right now Washington's catching is hurting with both Clint Courtney and Hal Nara gon, the No. 1 and 2 men, benched with injuries. That left Lavagetto with rookie Steve Korcheck, who proba bly won't make the grade, as his only receiver. So he put 42 - year - old Clyde McCul lough back to work. He's done so well that he may be kept. Long Beats Shot Mark Los Angeles-flJPD-Thanks to a half - dozen wheelbarrows full of dirt - and a mighty right arm-young Dallas Long today stood a good chance of being accepted as the world's best shot putter. The 19-year-old University of Southern California sopho more tossed the 16-pound iron ball 64 feet, 6Vz inches Satur day in a dual relays meet be tween USC and the Southern California Striders Athletic club. The heave bettered by 16 inches the accepted world record. The shot put area, at first thought to be too greatly sloped, was surveyed by a civil engineer after Long's toss and it was declared well within the limits of slope set by the Amateur Athletic Un ion AAU. (UPD The San Francisco Giants played like the pennant was at stake Saturday as they defeated the Boston Red Sox, 6-3, in an exhibition baseball game. Everything was fantastic -the fielding, the hitting and the pitching. In the fielding department, Orlando Cepeda made his greatest effort as a left fielder as he climbed the wall to spear a long drive by Lou Clinton, Willie Mays robbed Haywood Sullivan of a 400 foot smash to right-center; and Felipe Alou took a high fly deep in right - and threw out Eddie Sadowski on an at tempt to score from third. Eddie Bressoud sparked the Giants' hitting attack with a homer, a double and a single. Orlando Cepeda homered and Manny Alou doubled as San Francisco had nine hits. In the pitching department, Mike McCormick went five innings allowing only one hit and no runs. The Red Sox got to Billy O'Dell for seven hits and three runs in two and one-third innings - but Billy Loes came in for the final in ning and two-thirds to give Boston nothing but zeros. Wilkins Shines For East Quint United Press International Coach Pete Newell thinks his college AU-Star team faces a "rough" job in this week's Olympic basketball tryouts -and that the absence of amaz ing Lenny Wilkens will make it even rougher. "Wilkens is terrific," said Newell after watching the slender backcourt star from Providence College pop in the winning goal for the East with five seconds left in Saturday night's 67-66 game against the West before a sellout crowd of 18,496 at Madison Square Garden. Wilkens shared "most valu able" honors in the game with East teammate Jerry West, who led the scoring with 23 points. Wilkens hit four jump shots in the last 2Vz minutes to save the game, climaxing his spree by stealing the ball from Michigan State's Horace Walker and swishing a short one-hander for the winning basket. Try and Stop Me By BENNETT CERF ABRAHAM LINCOLN once was asked by a New York firm for information on the financial circumstances of one of his neighbors. He obliged with the following: "I am well acquainted with Mr. ' and know his assets. First cf all, he has a wife and baby; together they ought to be worth $50,000 to any man. Secondly, he has an office in which there is a table worth $1.50 and three chairs worth, say $1.00. Last of all, there is in one corner a large rat-hole which will bear looking into. Respy., A. The hostess suddenly announced, "Mr. Herford here will now compose a poem on the spur of the moment in honor of this auspicious occasion." "Nothing doing," spluttered Herford.
