Or. 1 W C Sunday, March 27, 1960 By Lynn M iSmall Worlds Around Us Watkins Thank You for Those Who Plant Trees We all have so many things to be thankful for that we often forget those whose long ago thoughtfulness made many of our present days and lives more joyful, those con siderate and generous folks who planted trees that some one else could benefit. This became vividly clear to me the other day when I noticed a very old gentleman leaning on a shovel at the side of a road. The day was warm and the earth had that peculiar earthly smell so often present after a soaking rain. At the old gentleman's feet was a freshly dug hole. I stopped because it seemed strange that a man so old should be digging in the earth. Welcomed Rest He was tired and welcomed the rest that a chat with a passerby would afford. He was frigidly, as the old are so liable to be. Hs said very simply, when asked, "This is my 85th year, and every year now for longer than I can re member I've planted a tree." There must have been a question in my silence for be fore I could . speak he went on "I'll be gone long before ths tree I'm planting will be large enough to afford shade for a rabbit, but someone, some day will enjoy it. They won't know who planted it, or care, but there will be some who will enjoy its beauty, or rest in its shade." I have come to realize what the old gentleman meant. Someone plants a tree, builds a shrine or works and labors to create something worth while for someone else to use or enjoy, knowing all the while that he who planted it, planned it, or created it, could never live to see the result. These generous, unselfish folks are not looking for re wards or profits. They are giv ing out of the goodness of their hearts. They build for people they will never know. Need Money There are going to have to be a great many folks who will plant a tree, or throw back a fish they do not need, or refrain from pulling a trig ger when they see a bird or an animal. If there isn't, be fore many years the children born tomorrow will be cheat ed out of their rightful her itage. They deserve the right to enjoy all the natural beauty of these things originally placed here. We have no right to deprive them of any part of it. Even the trees my old friend patiently' planted, giv en a chance, will grow. Under God's hand all the mysterious chemistry of growth and life over the years will develop into masterpieces of Nature. H. Creager. Creager said the first of the year figures included 1,043 new phones places in service in the Medford area during 1959, one of the company's businest years locally.
