Jtrry J My wife and I have been married 14 years and have three youngsters, ranging from 4 to 8. My wife worked until our second child was born. I had a low-paying job, but was going to college nights to tram for a better career. I didn't want Adele to work after our first was born, but she insist ed. At last she became ill from the strain of caring for a household and a lob and the doctor ordered her to quit. Unfortunately. I have not yet made the best connections job-wise and we are still pret ty bad off financially. How-ever,-I'm hopeful that things will soon improve. Adele wants to go back to work un til they do, but I'm afraid she'll become ill again and that will make matters worse. Adele J. All of Jerry's ob jections to my working are nonsense. He knows very well that the doctor has given me a clean bill of health, but he keeps saying that I'm really not strong enough and the kids need me, etc. Anything to keep me home. I have never felt more en ergetic in my life. My mother is more than willing to take care of the kids. My old boss is dying to have me back. So what's there to crab about? I feel Jerry always resent ed my working. I only want to help him on his feet. The poor guy has had the toughest breaks getting his start. The Council: There is more than one way of helping a man to his feet. The way Adele suggests would more likely pull the ground from under Jerry's feet. Adele shows some under standing when she says she has a feeling Jerry always re sented her working. Why did she persist? Why didn't she give her husband the oppor tunity to take on his full re sponsibility as breadwinner when he wanted it so much? Why does she now threaten to take away his normal and rightful function though he fights tooth and nail? . There is a strong possibili ty that Adele is largely re sponsible for her husband's "tough breaks." He is con scious of the fact that his wife has so little confidence in him that she is prepared to leave three small children home, and he must approach each new possibility with the fear of defeat uppermost in his mind. Just as Adele is anxious to usurp her husband's rightful role, her mother seems to have moved in on hers. Pos sibly this woman is the root of the problems. Adele feels forced out of the house by her mother who spends all day with her children. With her mother around constantly, Adele cannot possibly feel like a mother herself. She seems to show little sense of responsibility for her chil dren., She should be aware that this is her one and only chance to bring up her own family in the way she thinks best. Her mother cannot pos sibly do this for her. When Jerry expresses fears that Affele will become ill again, he is also saying, "You belong to the weaker sex. Earning a living calls for a strong man." Adele should take the hint and confess to a little feebleness. It might strengthen her husband. (Copyright 1960, " General Features Corp.) Poems Available On LP Recordings Washington (UPD - A re corded anthology of contem porary English and American poetry - with each poem read by its author - is being made available to the public by the Library of Congress. The album of three long playing records (monaural, 33 13 rpm) includes selec tions from 46 poets, including Robert Frost, Marianne More, T. S. Eliot. William Carlos Williams, Edna SU Vincent Millay, Robert Graves, Con rad Aiken, Archibald Mac Leish, W. H. Auden, Stephen Spender, E. E. Cummings and Ogden Nash. Anthologist Oscar Williams selected the 78 poems includ ed in the album. The Library of Congress has been collecting an archive of sound recordings of the voices of poets reading their own works for many years. Excerpts from it were pre viously made available to the public in single records, but this is the first comprehensive album. " It is entitled "Album of Modern Poetry -An Anthol ogy Read by the Poets." It may be ordered from the R e c o r d ing Laboratory, Li- brary of Congress, Washing ton 25, D.C. The price is $14.85, including excise tax and shipping costs, for the complete album. The first man-made nuclear reactor was created in 1919 by Ernest Rutherford. Legal Problems Hinder Use of Cadaver Blood Chicago-(Science Service) The use of cadaver blood for transfusions may appear to be somewhat ghoulish to some persons, but that would not be the primary reason for its unpopularity in this country, a Chicago surgeon said here. Blood from a dead person can be as good as blood from a living person. However, there would be too many fam ily and legal problems to hur dle on the sides of both the donor and recipient, Dr. Leo M. Zimmerman said in a talk entitled "The History of Blood Transfusions." Once the person is dead, he pointed out, the remains legal ly belong to his next of kin, who has the say-so about what happens to the body. Must Have Task Force Another disadvantage, he pointed out, is that a large transfusion task force must be roaming the city at all times ready to speed to the scene of death and draw the blood. "Can you. imagine this in a city the size of Chicago?" he asked. Also, there is no need for such blood, since American blood banks are well stocked with blood from live profes sional and volunteer donors. Dr. Zimmerman said that ca daver blood transfusions were begun by Soviet scientist Serge S. Yudin at the Sklifos- ovskii Institute in Moscow in 1930. Since then, more than 27,000 such transfusions have been performed there. Doe Not Clot The Russians claim as ma jor advantages of this tech nique the facts that cadaver blood does not clot, or if it does, it quickly liquefies again, and that eight pints can be drawn from one sub ject, whereas only one pint can be safely taken from a live donor at one time. However, cadaver blood is non-clotting only when the donor has died suddenly. The Russians eliminate those bodies with open wounds where infection can enter. They do not use blood until a complete autopsy has been performed to be sure the vic tim had no disease that might be carried in the blood stream. Polar Bear, Once Circus Star, Baffles Children at Denver Zoo Denver (UPD Velox, the blind old polar bear, has baf fled little children at the Den ver City Park Zoo for nearly 24 years. They wonder how she can walk so sure-footed along the edge of her pool without stumbling into the water. The answer is simple. Velox once was the star performer in a circus tight-rope walking act, until she was retired for poor eyesight.' Go By Sense "They go by sense more than sight anyway," says 72-year-old Clyde Hill, who re tired last year after 36 years as zoo director. His father was the pioneer director of the zoo, so Hill has spent most of his life around ani mals. Hill believes the bear's blindness is a blessing rather than a handicap. It got her out of the circus act and into the finest of polar bear en closures. "She is the happiest and most fortunate polar bear we've ever had here." Hill says. "People who see her pacing back and forth in her pen say 'oh, that poor blind bear,' but she isn t miserable; she's a happy bear." Circus, but she didn't have the luxurious quarters she has under her artificial mountain, surrounded by a moat of cool water, in the Denver Zoo. As a circus per former, Hill points out, she had to travel through some fairly hot weather. Was Circus Star Hill purchased Velox back in 1936 "when they came through town." . "She was the star of that circus until her eyes were damaged," he said. "I'm afraid somebody did a little too much whip - snapping. Al though" she was a great tight rope walker, she slowed up the act because she couldn't see. But she wasn't totally blind." Hill says Velox is so tame that zoo keepers get right in the enclosure and wash her down with a hose every day. Spring and- almost summer-like weather are with us. The time has come to look back over the season just past and take note how it has tieea for birds. The season was exceptionally dry through the fall and early winter. We caught up quite a bit on our needed rainfall in February and early March. Then came the heat. We had six days in a row with the temperature 80 or above. This I have never seen here before. I guess nobody else has either, because it is a new record. This warm weather has more effect on plants and insects than it does on bird life. The return of birds from the south depends more on the calendar and the increase of daylight, although it is sometimes slowed by stormy weather. Se we have, for this date just about the normal number of birds that have come back. We have three kinds of swallows, tree, violet-green and rough-winged. The tree is the blue-backed swallow; the violet green has a green back with IJttle violet patches not usually visible in life; and the rough-winged is the brown-packed one that nests in holes in banks. The pretty cinnamon teal have returned, too, and may be seen on the ponds along Gregory rd. Turkey vultures are another spring arrival, and at the other end of the size scale, rufous hummingbirds. Now that we have brought things up to the present, let me go back and comment on the past. Our Christmas Bird Count was duly recorded in the Mail Tribune. That account said we found 79 species. I later discovered I had omitted one that we had seen, a Spotted sandpiper, so we actually found 80. This was pretty good for a winter day (Dec. 30) with fog covering most of the valley. It was friends and readers of my last previous column that helped us locate at least two of these, barn owls and pileated woodpecker. I have found that it pays to write colmuns. Some of our most interested bird records have come from readers of these columns. It is interesting how each year some kinds of birds come up scarce and other unusual ones show up, or come in greater numbers. We had just one year with a considerable number of evening grosbeaks (early 1958). This year I haven't seen any and have heard only one report of them in the valley. Even more striking has been the shortage of varied thrushes (Alaskan robins). Usually we have an abundance of them on our place, especially from January on. This year one came to the place just once, and I have had very few other reports. In compensation we have one fine bird that has appeared in greater numbers this winter and early spring the moun tain bluebird. Our common bluebird here is the western. It has a red breast. The mountain bluebird is blue all over, a lighter shade than the commoner variety. I think they are like a bit of heaven come down to earth. I love them. They were found on the Christmas count and we have seen them several times since, on Cherry Lane and at several points along Antelope rd. Some people don't know that we have a colony of magpies in pur valley. They are usually found around the base of Pompadour Cliff at the foot of the Dead Indian grade. The time we looked for them this year there seemed to be more than in the past we thought about 8 or 9. Birds are hard to count because they keep flying around and you can't be sure whether you have a new one or the same one in a new place. I had the pleasure of taking two small birding trips this year. All pleasure trips are birding trips with me. I got my wife to go with me to Redding and we looked for birds down along the Sacramento River. We saw an Anna's humming bird in a manzanita bush and heard California thrashers sing. More recently the whole family and one extra boy went to the beach and had one whole day of birding, or playing on the beach for the boys. We found a wonderful 'place to stay where the cabin looked out on the bay of the Smith River, where many interesting birds came. A flock of sander lings and a flock of black turnstones joined each other on the pebbles and sand just below the cabin. T.M. 4-H Club Phoenix Flying Stitchers The Phoenix Flying Stitch ers 4-H sewing club met re cently in the Phoenix High school home ec room. We had three new members. Terry Campbell served refresh- ments. Our next meeting will be held April 9. Linda Rasmussen, Reporter Shady Cove Cut Ups The Shady Cove Cut Ups 4-H club meeting was held re cently at Mrs. Oliver's home. We studied on the care of the hair. After the meeting, Mrs. Oli ver had a surprise birthday party for her daughter, Daun Cherie. One member was ab sent. Our next meeting will be March 30 at Mrs. Oliver's home. AU the girls finished their garment protec tor except three. Some of the girls started their aprons. Seven girls attended and no visitors. Transportation was provided home.
