Texas Written for UPI As we again en ease in the observance of the 40 days of fast oy our Lord in the desert as related by the evangelist we should again renew our intention to enter into His spirit of prayer and cenance. Our observance of this holy season should not be so much negative as positive. The times more than ever before call for more positivism on the part of Christians for Representative Named for PT-N Dave Estergard has been appointed outsside representa tive for Pacific Telephone- Northwest in Medford, Ash . land and Grants Pass, accord ing to Manager J. H. Creager. Estergard is a graduate of Harrisburg High school. He has also attended Oregon State college, majoring in bus iness administration. Telephone service for Ester gard started in Eugene in 1956. He was appointed an engineering assistant in the company's commercial de partment in Portland in 1958. He held that position until his recent assignment here. Estergard, his wife, and their two sons, Steve and Bob, will reside at 424 Highland dr., Medford. Two Well Diggers Killed by Blast Coeur d' Alene, Idaho (UPD Two Post Falls, Idaho, well diggers were killed on a farm three miles west of here Thursday by an explosion at the bottom of a 250-foot shaft. Sheriff John Rasor said an air hammer operated by Lau rence Mitchem, 25, may have blown up while Mitchem was working in an air pocket created at the bottom of the shaft by a bell-shaped ap paratus. Mitchem and Jerol Bainter, 3R: were killed when the bell shot upwards in the shaft and then plummeted back to tne bottom. Bainter was standing nn ton of the bell, a devise connected by cables to the ground level. Transmissionman Attends Classes E. F. Ellson, transmission man, attended classes in Port land last week on the main tenance and operation of heavy-duty microwave radio equipment, according to J. H. Creager, Pacific Telephone Northwest manager here. The microwave equipment Ellson is studying is capable of handling 3,000 simultane ous messager or five TV pro grams. The classes are conducted in Pacific Telephone-Northwest's plant training school where telephone employees learn all phases of telephony. Laboratory facilities enable the men to "learn by doing." Sweetland Accuses Howell Appling of 'Economy Stunt Portland State Sen. Mon roe Sweetland (D-Milwaukie), publisher of the Milwaukie Review and candidate for sec retary of state, accused Howell Appling Jr., the in cumbent Republican candi date, of "arranging a phony economy stunt" in concealing Oregon's membership in the National Association of Secre taries of State. At the same time, Sweet land charged Appling with "bungling and butchering" the publication of the 1959-60 ediction of the Election Laws so badly that the entire 4,600 volumes of the 160-page book had to be reprinted and re issued a second time. 'Sound Investment' ' Sweetland said if he is elect ed secretary of state, one of his first acts' will be to re store Oregon's membership in the national secretaries of state organization "as a sound investment in good . govern ment." Sweetland reported that Oregon's annual dues in the association is only $100 "in return for which Oregon secretaries of state have been exchanging valuable experi ence and knowledge on the intricate problems of their of fice since the turn of the century." "It is amazing," Sweetland said, "that the appointed Sec retary of State, after holding office a few months feels he knows so much he can cast aside membership in the old est state government associa tion in America-an organiza tion in which all his predeces sors played an honored role ever since it was founded in 1904. Prudent businessmen have long recognized that par ticipation in their trade as sociations and chambers of commerce is a sound business practice which results in sub stantial savings and in new and profitable ideas. This ac cepted business principle is just as valid in government," Sweetland declared. Sweetland displayed copies of the two different sets of Election Laws published by the secretary of state" and pointed out that on the cover of the second volume appear the words: "THIS BOOK SU PERSEDES PREVIOUS EDI TIONS." "Even the second 'corrected' volume of the Election Laws contains seri ous errors," Sweetland said. CP Official Buys Selness' Store Central Point - Lyle Paull, Central Point city adminis trator, has announced that he has purchased the Setness Va riety store at 329 Pine st. in Central Point. A. M. Setness had sold the property in January to take a position in California as manager of a variety store in Anderson and to supervise the building of a variety store in Redding. He will also manage the Redding store. Setness sold the variety store in January to Mr. and Mrs. Walter Strickland of Rogue River. Because of ill health, Strickland decided to sell the property and Paull became the purchaser. The new name will be the Central Point Variety store. Paull is spending his two weeks vacation getting ac quainted with his new busi ness and getting his affairs in order. After his vacation, he will be back on duty at the city hall until his term ex pires in January, he said. Edith Green on List for Defeat Washington-OIPD-Rep. Edith Green (D-Ore.) said Thursday the Teamsters Union appar ently had placed her on its list of candidates to be defeated. She said she was listed for two reasons her support of Sen. John Kennedy (D-Mass.) for president and her support of the Landrum-Griffin labor bill.
