O $: Europeans Buying Guns for Defense Johannesburg - (UPD - Eu ropeans today were reported buying up guns for defense against possible new violence "when Africans stage a 24-hour work stoppage Monday to pro test the mass shooting at near by Sharpeville. Chief Albert Luthuli, head of the banned African Nation al Congress, called the work stoppage but emphasized it would not be directed against commerce or industry. Under a 1953 law, Africans are for bidden to strike. "I call for every African man, woman and child, and upon all other sections of the people to observe Monday as a day of mourning ... by staying home and not work ing,"he said. 80 Africans iKlled More than 80 Africans were killed at Sharpeville and at Langa, near Capetown, last Monday and Tuesday. They had marched on police sta tions in crowds of thousands and invited arrest by attempt ing to turn in their identity books, which all non-whites must carry. In Vanderbijl Park, near Sharpeville, a local magis trate reported that Europeans were applying for firearms permits in increasing num bers. Dealers said they were almost sold out, and were sending to Johannesburg for new supplies. Formalities were simplified so that Europeans had only to swear that the weapons were to be used for self-defense. Armored cars patroled the streets in four native loca tions, but there were no in cidents. Luthuli said that the fact that no policemen were in jured in the incidents showed the government deliberately chose to ignore riot control methods "which are used in all civilized countries." Tried Tear Gas A South African govern ment statement said that tear gas was tried on the crowd at Sharpeville but failed to dis perse it. The statement -said police could not risk a baton charge because they number ed 150 and estimated the crowd at 20,000. Minister of External Af fairs Eric H. Louw Wednes day told American Ambassa dor Philip Crowe that his gov ernment was concerned over the United States action de ploring the shootings "with out first acquainting itself with the full facts." In the United Nations, the nine African members con demned the incident as an "in human massacre" and called a meeting of the 29-member Afro-Asian group today to dis cuss further action. i if 1 1 i i m nmtmi i r tffnTr-rr fc- " LUSK CALLS ON IKE Judge Hall S. The brain, capable of more than 60 changes, goes through its routine-thanks to another "brain" an electronic computer, which op erates it. (UPI Telephoto) Tranquilizers Destroy Tumors New York (Science Serv ice) Some tranquilizers have been found to increase the blood's natural ability to de stroy animal tumors in test tube experiments. Dr. Paul Fluss of the Institute of Ap plied Biology told the Ameri can Chemical Society here that animal blood serum treated with the tranquilizers Compazine and Frenquel halted the growth of ascites (liquid) tumors that had been removed from test animals. When the treated ascites cells were transplanted into test mice, the mice "seemed to have lost their ability to produce tumors," he said. Un treated cells, on the other hand, induced cancer in the animals.. Certain other chemicals, in cluding sugars and urea, seem to decrease the serum's can cer - destroying ability, Dr. Fluss said. Although tests are now in progress with mice, he said, none of these effects have been investigated in the clinic. Device Protects Pedestrians Washington - (Science Serv-ice)-Cars have had protective bumpers for a good many years. But, while they do a pretty good job of keeping the chassis from being too damaged, they are pretty hard on human beings. With this in mind, David Gutman of Philadelphia has invented an automobile bump er that will alleviate injuries to pedestrians when hit by a tar. His device consists of three main parts-a holder, a cush ioner and an ankle protector. In operation it is designed to reduce the force of a blow, to prevent injurj to the fest or legs by the ec ;e of the steel bumper, and t catch the pe destrian so thi.t he will not fall backward on the street. If a person Is hit by the front of a car equipped with the device, his body triggers the release of the telescoping, ' springed extensions of the holding device. These come to gether behind the person's thighs so that he is held be tween the holding device and the cushioning device on the car's hood. High School P.E.
