Crater Will Open Baseball Schedule Central Point - Crater High school's baseball aggregation opens its 1960 season here on Friday and Saturday against California teams. Coach Bill Piche will send his Comets into action on Fri day in a doubleheader against Del Norte of Crescent City. First game of a doublebill is set for 1:30 p.m. Crater meets Yreka on Saturday with a single tussle scheduled also for 1:30 p.m. Five or six lettermen will be in the lineup. Piche will have Jerry Korbol, two-year vet, at first base, and Ron Hale, one-year-monogram man at third. His second and short stop combination is made up of a pair of freshmen, Pat Pepper and Mike Glines, and the coach is high on their po tential as a double play duo. Others In Lineup Ed Allen, letterman, is the probable catcher, with Gary Reinking Hits Triple Walla Walla - (UPI) - Oregon State's Beavers defeated Whit man 10-0 in a baseball game Wednesday for their second win in a row over the Mission aries. Bill Oerding of Roseburg went the route on the mound for Oregon State, scattering seven hits and striking out seven. Oregon State broke the game open in the sixth with three runs, added one each in the seventh and eighth and then scored five times in the ninth. The Michigan team totaled 3096 and the Ohio delegation fired a 3060 to drop May wood Medical center's 2056 score to third. Anchorman John Nickell led the A & A team with a 678 series while lead-off bowl er Jack Born added 658. Johnson, letterman, in left field and Loyal Higinbotham in center. If Bill Anhorn, a letter winner, pitches, the right field choice may be be tween Max Lichenstein and Bill Allen. If either John An horn, cousin of Bill and a letterman, or Denny Samples is pitching, Bill Anhorn is ex pected to be the right field selection. Looking good in an inter squad game on Monday, also, were Jeff Anhorn, catcher and brother of Bill, and Louis Al varez, shortstop and second baseman. Jeff tripled and sin gled in the game. Crater will play its games on a diamond on its own school grounds this spring. For a couple of seasons the Comets called Cheney field their home park. Delivered in Medford Ext. 46 Red Raiders Begin Baseball Campaign Ashland-Play ball will ring out over the Southern Oregon college baseball diamond when the Red Raiders open the 1960 season with at least a single game against the Uni versity of Oregon Ducks be ginning at 1:30 Friday. A second game will be played if time and weather) permits. I It will be the opening game of the season for the Ducks j also and the 'Raiders have i been priming for (three weeks in an effort to avenge two losses to the Ducks last year. One loss was in the late ' in nings in a squeaker 7-6, in Eugene. Following the games tomor row, the Raiders and Ducks will go to Eugene for a sim ilar setup on ' Saturday on the University diamond. Raider coach Ted Schopf has still to : reveal who his opening chucker will be but he will choose from Don Van nice, John Younger, .Bob Johnson, or Marty Vogler. Nevi Question He has one other big prob lem and that is the ability of Chuck Nevi. Nevi is still hobbling a little bit as a result of a collision in a double play break up. Whether or not Nevi will be able to open at second or not is a question. If not it will probably be Jack Kopacz ' who will team with Jim Dietz at the key stone combination. Jess Mun yon at third and Jack Brown at first will round out the in field. The Giants were impres sive in the .sixth inning against the Cleveland Indians at Tucson Wednesday - but they didn't do so well in the other eight frames.
