Southpaws Numerous For Raiders Ashland 'I still can't get over the left-handers that are on hand for this season," ex claimed Ted Schopf, coach of the Southern Oregon college diamond crew who open the season against the University of Oregon in Ashland March 25, Friday at 1 p.m. Schopf was referring to southpaws John Younger, Marty Vogler, Bob Johnson, and Fred Louk. All are very promising chuckers and either one of the them could be in the starting lineup for one of the Oregon games. To add to the lefties, there are letterman Don Vannice and Kermit McLemore, al though the latter probably will be assigned to outfield duty for the most part. Freshman John Cook and Dave Hughes are remaining pitchers beside Earl Tichenor who plays alternately at first base. A unit of varsity players from last year outscored the newcomers 6-3 in a six in ning inter-squad game earlier last week as the players were beginning to hit the ball bet ter. Second baseman Chuck Nevi is still on the sidelines with the twisted knee and his return for the Oregon series is still up in the air. Nevi was injured in a breakup at second base on a double play at tempt. Since this injury Jack Ko pacz and Cook have been working at the keystone po sition. Phil Sword and Jack Brown have been taking up the slack on the pickoff play made fam ous by graduates Jim McAbee and Larry Mauer. Sword, the catcher, and Brown at first base, picked off one runner and came extremely near get ting two more in the last inter-squad game. Something new is being ad ded to the Raider baseball field and that is a green pick et fence which is being plant ed 320 feet down each foul line and 377 feet to left-center and right-center. It is five feet high. Owners and handlers will run labrador, golden and Ches apeake bay retriever dogs in the Friday, Saturcay and Sun day trials in the Camp White area north of Medford. Com petition will be in open, ama teur, qualifying and derby stakes. Both land and water series will be run and pigeons, pheasants and ducks will be used. Hunting conditions are simulated in the tests. Among dogs entered, also, is Ripco's Peter Pan, which placed first last year in the open stake. Peter Pan is owned by Dean Parker, Seat tle, Wash., and was handled by Paul Shoemaker, Issaquah, Wash., professional. High Fly er placed third in the 1959 open here. Shoemaker is one of four pro handlers scheduled to run dogs here. The others are Ed Minoggie, Portland; Marvin (Snuffy) Beliveay, Sonoma, Calif., and Garth Stocker, Carnation Farms kennels, Car nation, Wash. Entries so far are from Ore gon, Washington and Cali fornia. The trial is one of a number on a west coast cir cuit. Shot pheasants will be on sale at the trial grounds. Los Angeles 4 Cincinnati "B" 4, Philadelphia 3 Phila. "B" 3. St. Louis "B" 1 John F. Carol shouldn't have expressed an opinion. Carol F. It's a parent's duty to guide a child to the right mate. John F. My wife and I are having a disagreement about the best way to handle our 26-year-old son, Mark. We are hoping he'll marry soon as we think it will straighten him out. He has shifted from job to job, never getting a seri ous start in any line. He has only one good friend and nev er dated much. Recently he started dating one girl and brought her to the house for coffee after their date. The next day he asked what we thought of her. I didn't like her, but I said she was nice. My wife criticized her so much that Mark lost his temper and ran out of the room. He has been depressed ever since. I don't think Carol should have expressed . an opinion. Carol F. It's a parent's responsibiliy to help a son or daughter choose the right mate. If a person can't de pend on his mother or father to given an honest opinion, who can he depend on? This girl was not for Mark. I could see that right away. She had dyed hair and wore about a ton of makeup. She smoked one cigarette after another and kept dropping ashes all over the place. Mark is a quiet, conservative boy who doesn't even smoke. My husband has no com mon sense. He is so eager to see Mark married and settled down that he is ready to mar ry him off to the first girl who comes along. Mark may be a little unsettled, but he is an intelligent, good-looking man and doesn't have to tie himself down to a floozie. The Council: We agree with Carol that it is a parent's responsibility to help children choose the right mate. But this is a difficult and delicate matter and shouldn't be at tempted by steam roller meth ods. Some young people will be frightened out of exposing their friends to harshly crit ical parents. Parents should be aware j that they may be more objec tive ;"id experienced, but they are not infallible. They should take time to get to know the individual and think the whole situation through more carefully. Parents should also be aware that it is vital for any young person to develop trust in his judgment. In our so ciety he must assume the re sponsibility for choosing his own mate and a parent's mis handled opposition must even tually lead to either violent rebellion or a total crushing of the young person's spirit. John evidently senses that his son lacks self-confidence and his little white lie may be justified. It is quite likely that Mark was fully aware of what his parents' attitude would . be once he saw the girl in his home. A more sat isfactory way of handling the situation might have been for the parents to mention something they liked about the girl and then to have asked more questions about her. This might have pro duced a more relaxed atmos phere in which Carol could have expressed her opinion without hurting her son's feelings. In a word, tact was needed. However, we don't think this unsettled young man should be urged into a mar riage for which he is prob ably not ready. He needs to do a lot more dating to begin to know his own mind.
