C Thursday, March 17, 1960 A Tiny Electrode Locates Causes Of Heartburn Los Angeles-(Science Serv ice) - A severe, chronic form of heartburn, which some times mimics heart disease and ulcers, is being diagnosed by a tiny electrode introduced into the esophagus. The research is being done by Drs. Steward G. Tuttle and Morton I. Grossman of the Los Angeles Veterans Administra tion Center and the University of California, Los Angeles, Medical Center. 1 - The electrode is passed via the nasal passage into the esophagus to a point just above where the esophagus joins the stomach. The sensi tive electrode detects minute changes in the acid talance in the esophagus. Pressures in the esophagus are recorded simultaneously. Increase in Acidity Episodes of heartburn have been correlated directly with increases in esophageal acid ity. These begin with a slight increase in acidity and dimin ish as acidity decreases. Thus heartburn appears to be associated with regurgita tion. No correlation between heartburn and pressure changes in the esophagus was observed. In additional studies with patients with severe, chronic heartburn, known as esopha- gitis, tiny amounts of hydro chloric (stomach) acid were dripped into the esophagus. Heartburn Produced In such patients heartburn was immediately produced. In patients without esopha gitile the acid-drip procedure produced no heartburn. Ap parently a sensitivity of the esophagus, perhaps induced by frequent regurgitation, is Oinvolved in esophagitis, the investigators said. The two procedures have proved valuable in diagnos- ing the disorder in cases in which X-ray studies and clini cal observations had not established its presence. Some of these cases had symptoms of angina pectoris and peptic ulcer, which were ruled out with the aid of the new proce dure. This fact is at the core of a plan topeed up the campaign against tuberculosis announc ed by Dr. H. McLeod Kiggins, president of the National Tu berculosis Association and clinical professor of medicine at Columbia University here. Essentially, the plan is to use available antituberculosis drugs to eliminate all sources of tuberculous infection by the adequate treatment ' of every person with active tu berculosis, and also selected persons with inactive disease. Active Campaign Asked Dr. Riggins called for an ac tive campaign to locate every person with active tubercu losis and insure his treatment with a drug or combination of drugs known to be effec tive against this communica ble disease. Thus, since the disease is spread from person to p?rson, the chain of infec tion will be broken and even tually tuberculosis can be eliminated. The NTA estimates there are at least 250,000 active cases of tuberculosis in the U.S. today. Of these, 100.000 are not known to health de partments. An addit i o n a 1 550.000 Americans are be lieved to carry the disease in an inactive form. Drugs now used to fight tuberculosis include isoniazid, streptomycin and PAS, p-ami-nosalicylic acid.
