Negro's Skin Color Possible Survival Clue ' Ls Angeles-(Science Serv-ic-The fact that the color of 8 a Negro's skin can act as a camewflage may have been a key to his survival through evolutionary ages. This is the belief of Dr. Ray mond B. Cowles, professor of v biology at the University of California, Los Angeles. In the deep shade of the ' tropical forest black skin is a protective coloration that may have contributed to man's sur vival when he was little more than just another beast of prey. As he acquired crude weap ons (but not yet clothes), he ' became the hunter instead of the hunted. His color, and hence concealment, enabled him to successfully stalk and kill bigger, healthier game j and to compete on better terms with other large predators. Ueat Absorbed 1 As for the old argument that dark skin offers heat pro tection, Dr. Cowles points to black's heat absorbing qual ity. Of the 50 per cent of the sun's heat that reaches the, earth in the visible spectrum, 83 per cent is absorbed by the nearly black skin of the Negro g; compared to 55 per cent in the white man. As for yellow and red pig ment, Dr. Cowles offers no explanation. He does believe that cloth ing, weapons and defensive tactics may have . antedated the origin of the white skinned peoples. Thus the sur vival value of appropriate skin color may have been subordinated. Executive Branch Joseph A. Moore, manager of the Medford branch of the First National Bank of Ore gon, has been named a mem ber of the executive commit tee of Associated Oregon In dustries, L. L. Stewart, AOI president, has announced. Moore's elevation to the 14 member operating and policy making executive committee follows his appointment to the association's board of directors last July. His new assignment fills a vacancy created by a recent change in by-laws. Stewart said Moore's mem:' bership on the executive com mittee will give southern Oregon representation it has not previously had on the AOI working committee. Promoted Recently Moore, . a veteran of 22 years with First' National, was promoted to a vice presi dency of the statewide bank ing system last January. Predicted to be of third Aitgnitude which is easily visi ble with the eye alone, Dr. Jtlizabeth Roemer of the U.S. Jfsval Observatory in Flag stiff, Ariz., told Science Serv ice that she does not expect the comet to be that bright but rfther about fifth magnitude. An object of fifth magnitude could be seen in the sky as a ry faint object when observ et with the naked eye if one Jnows where to look. It would b easier to see with binocu lars or telescopic aids. Approaching Sun At the present time the com- i approaching the sun and drill reach its closest approach tt about 47,000,000 miles on March 20. About April 1, it V ill have traveled far enough tvay from the sun to be visi 1 in the morning sky. The comet is moving from uth to north and by the end erf tkt month it will be near Polaris, the North Star. As it travels north from the con stellation Aquarius, it will crost part of Pegasus, and before it skirts Polaris toward the close of the month, it will pss by Cygnus, the northern cross, and Cepheus as well as Draco, the dragon. Across Ursa Minor Around April 30, the comet will go across Ursa Minor, the small bear, which contains Polaris, the North Star. At this time it will be closest to earth, about 20,000,000 miles, and will move very fast across the sky. It will be seen in the evening sky by this time, Dr. Roemer said. Tbft Comet Burnham has a tail which seems to be grow ing. Dr. Roemer said it was about one-third of a degree long last time she saw it, about the middle of February. Thrust Indicator BuiH for Jets o ' Glendale, Calif. - (Science Service) - A new kind of thrust indicator for jet en gines has been announced. It provides a pilot with immedi ate data on the performance of each jet engine. With present instruments, a pilo must calculate by chart and slide rule to arrive at com plete tkrust information. A representative of Astro nomies, a new division of the Mitchell Camera Corporation here, said the new instrument provides "a sharply increased safety factor."
