0 e o fr ttuusday, March 17. 1960 LOOK-AT THE i I Bgw Weight for Sitrer Not to Affect Dimes Washington - (Science Serv ice) - An atom of silver weighs less than previously thought, but this new finding of the National Bureau of Standards here will not affect the silver dimes in your pockets. A dime will still be worth ten cents. The new atomic weight of silver was set at v 107.873 through accurate . measure ments with a mass spectro meter. The atomic weight cur rently used is 107.880. A pound of silver will still be a pound of silver, to the layman, but, to the chemist, a pound of silver will contain theoretically, at least - more atoms than it formerly did. May Adjust Others The more precise atomic weight of silver may mean that the atomic weights of other elements may have to be adjusted. Silver has been used to set the atomic weights of certain other elements. What makes the new mea surement significant is the fact that the mass spectro meter was calibrated to ex traordinary accuracy through use of known mixtures of the two highly purified silver iso topes. ? The new atomic weight of silver was obtained by ioniz ing a sample of silver and shooting these ions through a magnetic field. Deflected Mor Quickly Silver occurs as two natural isotopes having relative weights of 107 and 1US. ions of the lighter isotope, 107, are deflected more quickly by the magnetic field of the mass spectrometer than those of the heavier isotope, 109. This enabled scientists to separate into groups and collect the 107 and 109 ions. By doing this and measuring the rela tive abundance of each, the new figure 107.873 was ar rived at which represents the atomic weight of silver. The research was carried Z out by Dr. V. H. Dibeler, W. - K. Shields and Dr. D. N. Craig , of the Bureau. "Mouth Cancer Easily Detected Brooklyn, N. Y. -(Science Service)-Mouth cancer, which accounts for five per cent of all cancers, can now be de tected and diagnosed in its early stages by a simple and r painless test. Dentists of the Veterans Administration Hospital here recently completed a three year trial in which the test proved to be highly efficient. The technique involves tak ing a smear or scraping from the mouth for microscopic ex amination, Dr. Henry. C. Sandler, the hospital's chief , of dental service, said. ' The older test method is biopsy, tfr removal and labor atory examination of a small piece of tissue. The newer scraping method is just as ac curate in testing for cancer, and often reveals the presence of cancer cells when the first biopsy does not. Dentists can use the smear ' techniaue on a wide-scale bas- ' is to check on harmless ap pearing lesions of the mouth ' and for natients who object to biopsy. However, if cancer is : indicated, the doctor may make several biopsies to con- firm the diagnosis.i : A cooperative study to de- termine the extent of the ! technique's usefulness has been begun by dentists at l VA stations. Camp Fire Girls Take Hike Members of the Wa-ke-ku-Wa Camp Fire group went on a hike to the top of John's Peak March 14. As soon as they got to the top they ate their lunch. While they were at the top they looked at the beautiful view and went ex ploring around the area. As they were hiking back down, they stopped several times and saw many things of in terest. Members of the group that took the hike were Rosalene Smith, Shannyn Talley, Chery Cavin, Linda Dalbec, Terry Davis, Linda Dykes, Terry Fletcher, Vicki Hull, Donna "Jahnke, Judy Pershall, Kevin Rainey, Karen Brooks, Hellen Norris.
