A Port Khrushchev III; Visit to France To Be March 23 Moscow - (UPD - Premier Ni kita Khrushchev's illness which forced sudden post ponement of his visit to France created scarcely a rip ple of excitement today in Russia. Details of the flu at tack were kept secret. A lass news agency an nouncement today said Khru shchev would visit France from March 23 until April 3, an indication he. was recover ing. It made no mention of his illness. -- . .. . Only On Paragraph In other countries a Pre mier's illness would be re garded as the biggest news of the hour but Khrushchev drew only one paragraph, on the front page of the Com munist party newspaper Pravda. Even this was un usual. There was no indication whether Khrushchev, who will be 66 next month, was under medical care at his Moscow home, at some sunny resort town on the Black Sea, in a clinic or at his country home. The wreck block ed the road for about five School Districts Vote Wednesday An election on. reorganiza tion of Rogue River and Evan .Valley school districts will be held from 2 to 8 p.m., Wednesday, according to County School Superintendent Alf B. Mekvold. Polling places will be the Evans Valley elementary school and the Rogue River High school. The plan to join the two districts was approved by the state board of education at its regular meeting in Salem on Feb. 19. If the overall majority of both districts approves the re organization plan it will be passed and become effective July 1. However, if 60 per V, "IVlt. If the plan is rejected during a second election then the current plan is ended. The Jackson county reorganization committee must then propose a new plan, re vise the current plan or wait a year and propose the same plan. The Phoenix administrative school district which now in cludes Talent, Wagner Creek and Phoenix, will decide dur ing a school board meeting tonight on whether to hold a school board election imme diately or wait until the May 2 annual school meeting. Two Prisoners Escape Deschutes County Jail Bend (UPD Two 18-year-old prisoners overpowered a 60-year-old jailer and escaped from the Deschutes county jail Sunday night. It was the first break in the history of the jail, built in 1941. Beine soueht were Thomas fRay Korbel. Harvey, 111., said to be AWOL, from the U.S. Marines, and Louis Floyd Myers, Brightwood. Ore., who were awaiting sentence on a charge of auto theft. Salem-ttJPD-Hawaii Lt Gov James K. Ray, 21, Lea burg millworker, was killed early Sunday when a car crashed into a power pole and went down a bank toward the McKenzie river 20 miles east of Springfield. They were told that Jordan was following a rig manned by Benjamin John Presnall, also Portland. Presnall applied his brakes and pulled to the shoulder of the highway, according to the report. Jordan braked, his rig started to fishtail and he at tempted to .. pass the . other truck. However, the rear of a trailer hooked on to the front of the other truck and Jor dan's -combination flipped on to its right side. While the vehicle was sliding, its fuel tank ruptured and caught fire. The operator crawled out through a window. Rural Firemen Central Point rural firemen were summoned to extinguish the blaze and flush down the fuel. Their action, police said, prevented fire from spreading to paint thinner which Jordan was transporting along' with general cargo. The other rig also was hauling thinner. Central Point police and sheriff's deputies assisted state officers at the scene and traffic was rerouted over old Highway 99 . from. Willow Springs, north of Central Point, to Gold Hill. Central Point rural depart ment sent two trucks and around 10 men to the scene. Firemen aided in transfer of the cargo from the wrecked trailers. Airport Restaurant Damaged by Water The Talk O' the Town Cafe at the Medford airport was considerably damaged by wa ter early Sunday when' a pipe connection in the third floor of the control tower broke about 12:30 a.m. ; According to reports the walls and ceiling of the build ing were also damaged before the break was discovered and repaired by city crews. The cafe was reported open for business today. Flames Damage Plant at Portland Portland-(UPD-A four-alarm fire flashed through the Coast Electric & Manufacturing company on the east side ear ly today. Cause was not im mediately determined. TO OPEN BIDS Salem-flJPD-The State High way commission will open bids March 29 on a Jackson county project calling for 4.5 M miles of paving of the Sams Valley Junction-Modoc road section about seven miles east of Gold Hill. Bakersfield, Calif.-(UPD-Roy Hirai of Nyssa, Ore., has been reelected vice president of the Western States Potato Grow ers Association meeting here. Salem-DPI)-Just over 3,400 carloads of fresh fruit and vegetables were inspected at Oregon shipping centers last month, according to the State Department of Agriculture. Castro Delivers Bitter Attack Against U.S. Havana-(UPD-Preimer Fidel Castro delivered a bitter ha rangue against the United States today and told Cubans they would have to prepare themselves for a "long strug gle" against economic subver sion and "aggression from abroad." The premier told his coun trymen they must tighten their belts and get used to the idea of spending millions of dollars on arms to save Cuba from the "powerful interests" threatening it. Rifle National Symbol Comparing Cuba with . the Algerian nationalists in their five-year-old war against the French, the premier declared: "For those interested in knowing, we can say we have more arms than the Algerian patriots." The national symbol of Cuba at this moment, he said, should be "a man working with a rifle at his side. We can neither abandon the rifle nor - our work." Castro spoke over television for 2 hours and 15 minutes in the early morning hours following a day-long patriotic rally marked by new denunci ations of the United States. Food Delivered to Snowbound Families West Jefferson, N. C.-OJPD-Weary rescue workers pushed ahead today with the hercu lean task of getting food and fuel to 1,500 mountaineer fam ilies snowbound in the -southern Appalachians. The rescue operations, brought on by snow-laden storms that repeatedly belted the area, were under way to day in four states-Virgina, Tennessee, North Carolina and Kentucky. Drifts in some spots measured 18-20 feet deep. 'Wake Me When You Situation Being 'Reevaluated' Salem-OIPD-Gov. Mark Hat field said that as of this morn ing he had not made a "final" decision on whom to appoint as the successor to Sen. Rich ard L. Neuberger (D-Ore.) Holding up the decision was the deadline for withdrawal of candidates, 5 p.m. today. He said he hoped the an nouncement would be Tues day. , -Might Reopen Door Although Hatfield' Thurs day ruled . out of contention all persons actively seeking election to the Senate-thus in cluding Sen. Neuberger's wid ow Maurine-the indication to day was that the door might be reopened for her appoint ment. Mrs. Neuberger, who filed for her husband's senate seat, is considered by many Demo crats and Republicans as well, as the popular and logical choice. 'Reevaluating' Situation Under a 1953 Oregon law, authored by the late Sen. Neu berger, Hatfield is required to name a Democrat to the position. However the law has not been tested in the State Supreme Court. The governor said he was "reevaluating" the situation, taken as an indication Mrs. Neuberger still might get the appointment. Court Interested In Smudge Pots A meeting will be called some time next week to get progress reports on steps be ing taken toward prevention of air pollution in Jackson county, County Judge Earl Miller said today. Miller said he is particu larly interested in exactly how many old style smudge pots have been converted -or replaced by the' less smoke producing types in . the vari ous fruit orchards.' - "I want to pinpoint what the actual conversion rate is," Miller said. "I will ask for a list of names of the various orchardists and what their rate of conversion is." Miller was keenly interest ed in reports that tires were being stockpiled in the Phoe nix area for the orchard heat ing season due in a week or two. He said he is planning to contact those orchardists per sonally. "This thing must be done voluntarily or enforcement legislation will be needed," Miller remarked. Next week's meeting will include representatives of the fruit and lumber industries and the City Sanitary Service. Of an estimated 50,627 open type heaters formerly used, 10,000 have been con verted, replaced, or will be replaced soon by heaters now on order, according to Dun bar Carpenter, Medford fruit grower, and representative of the fruit industry. Senate Majority Leader Lyndon B. Johnson used the Attempts To Reach Miners Continued . Logan, W. Va. t- (UPD - Coal grimed rescue squads early to day began digging three dif ferent routes in their effort to reach 18 miners sealed in a coal mine for more than six days. The exhausted crews late Sunday night inched to with in 150 feet of one of two areas where mine officials believed the trapped men may have barricaded themselves from the dense smoke and deadly gas fumes spawned by smold ering fires. The miners have not been heard from since 8:30 a.m. (e.s.t.) Tuesday when a slate fall ripped down electric cables and started a fire in the Holden No. 22 mine in southwestern West Virginia. Satellite Sends Strong Signals Washington - (UPD - The U.S. Pioneer V, sun satellite, ap proached the half-million-mile post today on its trek through space, still sending back radio signals to earth. The 94.8 -pound satellite Sunday set a distance record for deep space, communica tions when, its radio trans mitter - the most powerful ever sent into space was monitored from 412,000 miles away. The South Point Tracking Station on the island-of Ha waii reported it began a 20 -minute reading at 2 a.m. (e.s.t.) today and other at tempts were scheduled later in the day, elsewhere in the world. Many Seek County, A Talent man Friday after noon filed for nomination for Jackson county treasurer, bringing to 12 the number of candidates seeking nomina tion for county offices in the May 20 primary election. Filing for the Republican nomination for treasurer was Chester (Chet) L. Rapp, 30, of route l,,box 585, Talent. Rapp, who is a car sales man for the Jim Busch Ford Sales company, Ashland, has lived in Jackson county his entire life. He attended Tal ent and Ashland schools and is a graduate of Southern Ore gon college, majoring in ele mentary education. Rapp served as an instruc tor in the U. S. Air Force for four years. He is a member of Theta Delta Phi, men's hon orary fraternity, and the Ash land Elks club. This candidate is single,and makes his home with his par ents. Neuberger's widow, Maur ine, dressed in black, sat in a front row pew - with other relatives. Johnson said he and his col leagues flew to Portland "to share the privilege of paying tribute to one of the great Americans of our time." Ashland Girl Hurt In Recent Accident A nine - year - old Ashland girl was injured in a car and truck and trailer accident Sat urday afternoon south of Ash land, state police reported. The girl, Judy Ekstrom, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Wal ter Theodore Ekstrom, 508 North Main st., Ashland, was taken to Ashland General hos pital and x-rayed but extent of her injuries was not re ported. A truck and trailer operat ed by Raymond Henry Luiz, route 2, box 360, Lodi, Calif., started to overtake the south bound car driven by Ekstrom when the car made a left turn into Crowson rd., south of Ashland. State police said a com plaint would be filed against the truck driver for passing at an intersection. Kefauver's Name Taken Off Ballot Salem -UPD- The name of Sen. Only one candidate has filed for circuit court judge for Jackson and Jose phine counties, position No. 2. "During my 30 years in Washington I have never heard as many eloquent eulo gies as were given for Dick Neuberger in the Senate last Wednesday, and none more truly deserved." Governor Has Praise Gov. Hatfield, a Republi can, said Oregon's Democratic junior senator "fought the status quo. He ceaselessly. restlessly, wanted to move forward, to do more for his people, to leave them a legacy of carefully husbanded natu ral resources, a future as bright as that which our pioneer predecessors envis ioned." "I acknowledge with deep Garage and Shed Destroyed in Fires A garage was destroyed during a fire Sunday after noon on Table Rock rd., the Central Point Rural fire de partment reported today. The Central Point rural de partment received mutual aid assistance from the Medford fire department in putting out the fire at 6198 Table Rock rd. Firemen were able to save the house which contain ed a beauty salon, but not the arage. Central Point had two pumpers and 14 firemen fighting the flames. A shed was declared a total loss when engulfed by flames spreading from a trash fire at 121 Reager st., Medford fire men said. Two men were burning trash and shifted a fuel oil drum spilling some of its contents. This was ignited by the trash and flames quick-" ly spread to the 14 by 30 foot shed. He opened with a prayer, read the 23rd Psalm, and introduced the speakers. Morse Didn't Speak They included Johnson, Hatfield, Senators Paul Doug las (D-Ill.), Ernest Gruening (D-Alaska), former Democrat ic Gov. Robert D. Holmes, U.S. Supreme Court Justice William O. Douglas, E. Palm er Hoyt, publisher of the Den ver Post, and Dr. Richard M. Steiner of the Portland First Unitarian church. Sen. Wayne L. Morse (D-Ore.) also was present but did not speak. Douglas said Neuberger, as a free lance writer, "did more than any other person in his tory to bring to the nation's attention the potential of one area - the Pacific Northwest." College Students Arrested After Fight Ashland-Two Southern Ore gon college students were ar rested by Ashland police early this morning after a fight in a local bar-restaurant. Floyd W. South, 25, and Gregory G. Cooper, 21, each were charged with disorderly conduct and South was charg ed additionally with resisting arrest. Both were released on payment of $50 bail and or dered to appear in Ashland municipal court Friday for arraignment. Police made the arrests at 12:48 o'clock today. Cooper, they said, was in possession of a .38 caliber revolver but did not use or threaten to use the weapon during the fight. He told po lice he had been rabbit hunt ing.
