It's true literally because Howard stretches 6 feet, 7 inches and weighs about 250 pounds and it's true competi tively because the $100,000 bonus baby just could be ready to make the big time this year. And, if that's true, those Dodgers are likely to be come solid choices to make it two straight National League pennants. Willie Mays of the San Francisco Giants and Ted Williams of the Boston Red Sox flexed their muscles in intra-squad games Wednesday but it was Howard who pro duced the eye-popping news a tremendous wallop that not even Arthur (Red) Patterson, who ran down Mickey Man tle's famous 565-foot drive in Washington, D.C., could find! Dead Center Shot Howard, who hit 43 homers in the minor leagues last sea son and is regarded as certain to be a great major league slugger some day, cleared a tree in dead center field, 442 feet from the plate at Vero Beach, Fla. He tallied 22 points for the Border conference champs, but fouled out with seven minutes remaining. Oregon trailed 48-44 mid way in the second half when it scored 11 straight points to take a 55-48 lead. Oregon ,shot .444 in the second half with 16 out of 36 from the field while New Mexico State had 6 out of 31 for a paltry .194 second half. 22.3 Points Per Fracas More Than Hoop Rivals Black Tornado Averaged Medford High school's Southern Oregon conference an District 6 A-l champion ship basketball team shot at a .408 average from the field and .686 from the free stripe and outscored its opponents at an average of 22:3 points per game in establishing its 19-win, 3-loss record during the 1959-1960 regular season campaign. The Black Tornado, No. 1 rated among preps of the state, netted 1,551 points over its 22-game route to rival's 1,069. Its per-game average was 70.5 to adversaries' 48.2. Jerry Anderson led Med ford individual scoring with 140 field goals and 86 free tosses for 366 counters. He hit at a rate or 16.63 points per game. Bob Quinney was second high scorer with 209 points. Jerry Shults put in 200 and Lowell Dean 163. Others with more than 100 were Ken Durkee 144, Dick Ragsdale 141, and Booth Deakins 140. Among the cagers who played the most, Quinney was tops in accuracy with .460 from the field and .819 from the free line. Andy Leads In Rebounds Anderson was1 the team's rebound leader with 207 re trieves from the backboards. Lowell Dean had 160 snares, Quinney 155, Ragsdale 96 and Booth Deakins 88. In averaging 70.5 points per contest, Medford scorei ranged between 36 in an early season loss to North Bend and 92 in a triumph over Ash land. Tornado totals exceed ed the per game average 13 times. Rival scores ranged from 72 by Roseburg in top ping Medford in a December fray to 32 by Ashland. Op ponents betterd the 48.2 av--erage in .only nine, games. The Black Tornado next week will make its fifth trip in six years to the Oregon big school basketball tourney at Eugene. The week-long 32-t earn' tournament goes into the quarter-finals with only two of the top seeded teams out of action.
