; MAIL TRIBUNE, MedforJ, Or. B Thursday, March 10, 1960 Prescription Methods Used by Doctors Criticized oeBto (Science Service) -aete received a mental rap cra the fingers from an edi erial k) the Canadian Medi cal Association Journal here. The editorial criticized the Tfidespread misuse of drugs aai emphasized the illogic tHat prompts physicians to prescribe drugs for patients. 9he editorial appeared In the Seb. 27 issue of the journal. Iarational Behavior One doctor quoted in the editorial charged that physi cians are now, more than ever before, in danger of irrational and irresponsible behavior as therapists. This comment was followed by a reference to the statement made in the United States that only about five per cent of the 400 tons of antibiotics used on the North Amefican continent last year was used correctly. The rest was used in noninfectious con ditions and for the alleged pre vention of various conditions and represented a totally un justified expenditure of mon ey. On the other hand, doctors probably did not turn often enough to the use of antiD otics to prevent rheumatic fe ver, the editorial quoted. It is based upon two talks delivered at a recent meeting of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Canada. The editorial pointed up these reasons for this misuse: 1. There is and always will be an honest difference of opiiyon among physicians con cerning correct therapy. 2. There is the age-old un critical acceptance of ideas by physicians. Patient Pressure 3. Some treatment is given to the patient to make the doctor feel more comfortable, especially in those cases where the doctor knows he can do nothing to help the patient. 4. Pressure from patients who, through the application of a meager amount of pseudo scientific knowledge, tell the doctor what is best. Unfortunately, the public faith in science is growing while that in the individual doctor is dwindling, the edi torial commented. There is still a pathetic belief in the superiority of a committee of uninstructed persons over one man with special knowledge. Yet a positive step can be tak-1 en if as much publicity as pos-1 :L 1 - a xi j I iioie is giveu to me dangers ui over-prescription of antibiot ics and tranquilizers as to the sensational and usually erron eous reports of medical "dis coveries," it concluded. 7 7 nn (II 22 "tJt!!IStJ!5S""55 This Coupon Good For 50 EXTRA STAMPS With the purchase of 10-lb. bag of CANDI CANE SUGAR Good at Safeway thru March 1 2 This Coupon Good For 50 EXTRA STAMPS With the purchase f 10-lb. bag of m III I Ullfcll UUttf I rLUUli This Coupon Good For 50 EXTRA STAMPS with the purchase of 3 2Vi cans LADY ELBERTA PEACHES Good at Safeway thru March 12 All-Day Treasure Rar vour arms to the sun in this dress with the scal- shoulders with the curved bo lero.
