(ftnttCmtist) RADIATION BELTS-During 1960 space scientists, includ ing those of the National Aeronautics and Space adminis tration, plan a specialized study of the so-called Van Allen Radiation Belts, to prepare for man's entry into space. At least two huge space vehicles will be launched by NASA, one a Thor-Delta and the other a Juno II, which will put satellites especially equipped to study the Van Allen Belts, into orbit. Other satellites and space problems launched by the United States will carry instrumentation which will aid in the Van Allen study. The Van Allen Belts were given that name after data radioed back from the early Explorer and Pioneer space vehicles, enabled Dr. James A. Van Allen, of the State University of Iowa, to chart these belts of cosmic particles. The earth, like an ordinary magnet, has a magnetic field around it, composed of lines of force traveling out in a loop from one pole to the other. This magnetic field, like a cage around the earth traps cosmic particles and keeps them from showering down on the earth. The above map is an artist's conception of how these Van Allen Belts would appear if one could see "them. King FfAtarf Stock Slaughter Rules Tightened, Now Effective Salem The practice of tossing a few knives into a car and rolling into the coun try to perform livestock slaughter services is now il legal. An order of the state de partment of agriculture, sign ed Feb. 25 and now effective, sets up facility, sanitation and identification require m e n t s for mobile slaughterers. The last legislature brought the "on wheels" slaughter " oper ators under state license and regulation. The order is of immediate concern to any traveling oper ator "who engages in the busi ness of slaughtering meat food animals for farmers on farms or at any other location." It requires that equipment must be maintained and oper ations performed in a sanitary manner, and that carcasses must be stamped with the mobile slaughterer's license number. If transported, they also need the regular pro ducer's tag. At request of the farmer, mobile operators may trans port a carcass to a plant . for cutting and wrapping for the farmer, but must leave the carcass at this destination. Offal and hide cannot be haul ed in the same vehicle as car casses. New "facility" requirements include a covered truck, smooth metal interiors, steri lizing "tanks for utensils, a built - in water tank under pressure or a . water hose which can be connected to the farm water system. Regularly licensed slaught erhouses may operate mobile outfits without additional li cense, but must meet other requirements established in the new order. The outer belt would appear as a giant, fat bal loon tire laying on its side with the earth in the center. The larger drawing is a sliced-through cross section of the Van Allen Belts (the two crescents filled with dots, near the earth). At the north and south poles are the lines of magnetic force looping outward, the energy traveling from "S" to "N". The evenly-dashed lines looping out to the out side of the diagonally-striped crescents, from the outline of the earth's magnetic field. The lark areas within the Van Allen Belts indicates concentrations of cosmic radiation. Data evaluated after reception from the satellite Explorer VI has shown that during periods of heavy solar flares, or storms, the outer Van Allen Belt goes through a change. At first, the belt deflates like a punctured balloon, spilling its load of cosmic particles into the space between . the Outer Belt and earth. Then, while the solar storm is still in action, it expands again as it traps cosmic particles from the sun. It expands past its original size, filling the mag netic field (diagonally-striped area). Finally it drops back to its original size. The Inner Belt apparently remains un changed during solar flare activity. (UPI Telephoto) Time 4-H NEWS Beef Club Dr. E. M. Hanawalt, veter inarian, discussed cattle dis eases and prevention meth ods at a meeting of Central Point Beef 4-H club at the home of Carolyn Sidener. Each member answered roll call by naming a disease that is common to cattle. Thirty members and guests were present. Refreshments were served by Jeff and Bill Anhorn and John Swartsfager. Carolyn Sidener, Reporter Trail Blazers The Trail Blazers Horse club met March 1 at the home of Mrs. Tom Whittle. Presi dent Gary Whittle appointed Mark Schmidt as sergeant at arms. Carolyn Sidener, the junior leader, will hold a meeting at her house for new members who will be taking the 4-H rider test. An executive meeting will be held at Mrs. Whittle's, and a club swimming party is planned for Twin Plunges in Ashland. Members discussed a ride and decided on uniforms. They also talked about gaits of horses, grooming and care of the feet. Marion Gallucci brought re freshments. The translation, made from original texts, is part of a complete Bible. being worked on by four panels of trans lators. The agricultural journal "World Crops" said water alone is not enough to make the deserts bloom. Something is needed to trap the water in the soil and convert sand into fertile humus. . That, it said, is what makes the discovery of the chemist -whom it did not name - im portant. By chance, he ap plied a mineral called vermu culite to a bare sandy area of waste land. Within a few months, the sand was over grown with a firm growth of grass. The journal said vermucu lite, a mica-like mineral, works into the fissures of each granule of sand, trap ping moisture in the soil. Coarse grass could then be grown, forming a humus soil as it dies. SEARS Snake Hunting Big Business in Texas Killeen, Tex. -ffiPD- Want to try your hand at rattlesnake hunting? It's big business in Coke county, Texas. Last spring the county set a 50-cent-per-snake bounty and Warden Raymond Tay lor said it was enough for some persons to turn profes sional snake hunters. Best hunting time is in the fall and early winter months when the snakes have gone into their dens. Taylor said one hunter collected $736.50 from Octo ber through December. This man, he said, found and kill ed 62 rattlers under one rock and in one day took 253 sets of rattles. Another day .he got 251 sets. The county paid a total of $3,921 to hunters in 1959. Taylor says hunters drive the snakes out of their dens during cold weather by spray ing the dens with gasoline. Then as the snakes crawl out for fresh air, hunters chop off their heads with sharp hoes. Livestock plays a small role in the farm economy of Ma laya because local fodder is scarce. The hog, mostly used as a draft animal, is a com mon sight. Malaya also has substantial numbers of goats, cattle and chickens.
