According to the plan of the purvey, administered by the University of Pittsburgh with funds from the office of edu cation and other federal agen cies, it should be possible to learn about the educational system of America and about the talents of American youth by testing them one year and then following up a year later and again several years later. General Information Students will be asked gen eral information questions based on current events and general knowledge which a person gets from out-of-school sources. Planners hope to learn how educational back ground and interests work to gether to lead various kinds of talents into various pro fessions. Dr. John C. Flanagan, uni v e r s i t y administrator in charge of the project, said that the project will aid local and national planning groups to determine what the youth of 1960 have to offer. Educational researchers wish to determine the import ance of aptitudes, educational and guidance programs in as sisting the student to identify, develop, and use his talents. Included in the study will be public, private and paroch ial schools. The project will also deter mine the number of students who are planning to'enter col lege and advanced training during the next few years. Presum ably science could find ways of heading off pre-destined heart attacks. The "base line" is 3,983 men whose hearts first came under the scrutiny of the electrocar diograph 15 to 20 years ago when all were vigorously young. When such a pattern comes out on the paper, the specialist ex pects to find abnormalities when he examines the man whose heart gave it off.. In the cases of the 3,983 the medical examiners turned from the original recordings to men who were in the pink -who were the crewmen of World War II bombers and post-war pilots. Of the 3,983 individual heart wave pat terns, however, 42 were defi nitely abnormal and the nor mality of 109 were question able, although these 151 seem ed just as healthy as the oth ers. This raises the big question of the meanings of abnormal heart wave patterns in appar ently healthy persons, and it is the question Drs. F. A. L. Mathewson and G. S. The scientists expect their heart experiences over the next 20 years to tell them much. Men who have heart attacks before 40 are a very small percentage of those who have their attacks after they're 50. But so far, 3.3 per cent of the 3,983 who had abnormal read ings when young have devel oped heart disease. The com parable figure for those with normal readings is 0.7- per cent. The mean age of the men who have had heart trouble is 48 years. The scientists reported their work to the American Heart Assn. They pointedly noted that some of the recorded heart abnormalities they had studied were due to faulty re cording rather than to faulty hearts. Physicians and techni cians who take electrocardio grams should be very careful, and thus "reduce the number of instances in which doubt is cast upon the soundness of the heart of an apparently healthy person." All of the reptiles snakes, lizards and turtles - hibernate throughout the cold weather, according to Dr. Robert Storm. So do the amphibians - frogs, toads and salamand ers - in eastern Oregon. In western Oregon, however, they are often roused to ac tivity on days when the tem perature gets above 40 de grees. -: Champion hibernators among the small animals are ground squirrels, marmots, bats, and jumping mice. In the case of tree squirrels, skunks, chipmunks, and. bears, its really a case or "sleeping," not hibernating, he explains. True hibernation involves a drop in body temperature to within a few degrees of the surroundings. Breathing and heartbeat become extremely slow and irregular. In hiber nation, animals literally sink to the brink of death, Storm said. Hibernate in Groups ' , Snakes and bats hibernate in groups, almost all the oth ers alone. Hundreds of rattle snakes have been known to gather in underground, rocky retreats. Gopher snakes and racers often join them. Frogs, toads and salamanders sink into mud or gravel hiberna tion homes. Oregon ground squirrels sometimes go into hiberna tion in August after they have built up a good layer of fat. During the winter, they "live off the fat," Storm explained. They do not store food in their 2-to-3-feet down hiber nation nests. Tree squirrels, on the other hand, are not hibernators -just sleepers during the cold est days. They store nuts, seeds, and other food and live off them during the winter. The California ground squir rel or "gray digger" is in be tween. It hibernates but comes out for food on warm days. Until recently, it was be lieved that birds did not hib ernate. Selections were made by a vote of the student body or by the dean of girls.
