MAIL TRIBUNE, MedforJ, Or. Wadnatday, March 9, 1960 Cuban Attache in Venezuela Quits Bogota, Colombia - (UPD -Capt. Felipe Vidal Santiago said today he resigned as Cu ban naval attache in Vene zuela because he regards Pre mier Fidel Castro as a Com munist dictator who betrayed the men and women who shed their blood to put him in pow er. Vidal dismissed as "ridic ulous" Castro's charge that the United States was to blame for the explosion of the French munitions ship La Coubre in Havana last week. He said the blast was almost certainly caused by overheat ed water in the dock where the ship was unloading. "The cooling system of the Havana electric plant empties hot water alongside the.Tal lapiedra pier to which the La Coubre was moored," the 34-year-old naval officer said. "When" I was chief of mari time police in Havana, . I would allow no ship carrying ammunition to unload at the rs Tallapiedra pier." Vidal said he believes the present maritime police chief is one of Castro's rebels who has no technical qualifications for the job and who accord ingly may not have recogniz ed the danger. Navy's Glacier Clears Ice Path Aboard U.S.S. Glacier near Antarctica (Delayed) - IUPD -The U.S. Navy's most power ful icebreaker led the Danish icebreaker Kista Dan to the safety of open waters today. The husky Glacier tore through the last of a 54-mile pack of ice at 3:20 p.m. Tues day with , the red - hulled Scandinavian ship close astern. The Kista Dan, carrying Sir Vivian Fuchs' exDedition. had been trapped for 16 days at the eastern end of the Beiiing hausen Sea at the entrance to Marguerite Bay. "; Before the Glacier freed it, dangerous pressure ice had tipped the Kista Dan 12 de grees. Fuchs, in a message to the Glacier's Capt. Philip Porter, expressed thanks on behalf of his expedition and the Kista Can crew members. FINED ' ; Ashland Jewell Parr, 58, of 304 Fifth St., Phoenix, was sentenced to 30 days in jail and fined $200 after pleading guilty in Ashland municipal court yesterday to a charge of driving while under the Influence of intoxicating li quor. Grange News Sams Valley Grange ". Sams Valley Grange will hold a potluck dinner at the hall Saturday, March 12, at 6:30 p.m. according to Mrs. Lois Radomske, publicity chairman. Jerry Fitzgerald, master of the Grange, announced that the business meeting will fol low the dinner. The third and fourth degree will be put on by the Grange degree team. All Granges are invited to bring candiates, and partici pate in the potluck dinner as well. Central Point Grange ' "The 4-H Covered Wagon V Trek to Corvallis" was shown during the lecturer's program at a meeting of Central Point Grange recently. Miss Patsy Charley and David Foote were narrators. Reports on agriculture, hor ticulture, and legislation were given by Arnold Bohnert, Ed win Gebhard, Dee Hendrick son. and John Niedermeyer. HEC Chairman Mrs. O. T. Wilson announced that the club will hold a rummage sale at the Grange hall in April. All Grangers are asked to col lect articles for the sale. A collection of pitchers ranging in size from one inch to about six were shown on the display by Mrs. L. C. Gordon. Charles Morehouse report ed on the progress of the plans of the Grange County Festival committee. Dee Hendrickson added hat it is thought the Grange Festival, which is " planned July 30, will draw a crowd of several hundred peo- pie, with several State Grang ers attending. Mrs. Gaston Floux recrea t i o n chairman, reminded Grangers that on March 25. they can meet candidates and get acquainted. This will be open to all Grangers and friends.
