Alvarez' The Danger in Sun-Tanning In recent years skin special ists have been concerned over the very popular cult of sun - tanning At great ex pense thous ands of people go to the trop ics; .they take off their clothes, and spend much time every day getting their skin as brown as they can get it: I imagine most of them have the idea . that sun-bathing is strengthening them and im proving their health. So far as I know, there is no scientific evidence to sup port this view. A person should feel much stronger and better after a month spent on a Southern beach, but such improvement in health can be due to the vacation, and not necessarily to the sun-bathing. For years, we physicians have known that great expos ure to the sun is not good for the skin. It tends to age the skin and wrinkle it. Fluoridation Lack 'Shocks' Official Portland -fUPfl- The presi dent of the American Dental association says he is "shock ed" that Portland does not have fluoridation of its wa ter supply. Dr. Paul H. Jeserich told dentists Monday that "I can see no valid reason which should prevent any city from using fluoridation a health measure that has proved safe, effective and economi cal.". He said more than 43 mil lion Americans drink fluori dated water which he said had been proved to reduce in cidence of tooth decay by about 65 per cent. Dr. Jeserich added that all water contains some fluoride so that adding it did not mean adding a foreign substance to water. ed skin on the back of the neck of a "red neck" southern farmer or rancher. Skin spec ialists are concerned about the sun-tanning fad because, for years, they have known that heavy exposure of the skin, especially of the face, to rays of the sun favors the pro duction of little skin cancers. Many elderly persons must keep having these little growths burned off , every so often, as fast as they form. Now, I read that recently this problem was discussed with considerable concern by ex perts who, under the auspices of the American Medical As sociation, held a symposium on the harmful effects of sun light on the skin. In writing this, I do not want to scare the life out of people who have been sun bathing; I only want to tell them that if they go on spend ing much of their time lying out almost naked in the sun, it is questionable if they are improving their health, and they certainly are mistreating their skin. Salem Woman May Get Reward Salem -(DPD A Salem wom an, whose home was burglar ized by two escapees from the criminal insane ward of the state hospital Friday night may get a $100 reward. The inmates, convicted slay er James Norman Jensen and Jack Stanley Amason, were caught Saturday in an east Salem barn. Mrs. Helen Enloe discover ed the burglary Saturday morning when she returned home from a friend's house and her call to police put offi cers on the trail of the prison ers. Information leading to the arrest of escaped prison in mates calls for a $50 reward and in this case it would be double that. Mrs. Enloe said she would file an application for the re ward and Prison Warden Clarence T. Gladden indicat ed the application would be fully considered.
