'B Sunday, March 6, 1960 v V -4 v - Miss Nanetle Grow June Ceremony Planned by Pair Eagle Point - Mr. and Mrs. Hal Grow, Route 1, Box 368, announce the engagement of their daughter, Nanette, to Terry Edmondson, son of Mr. nd Mrs. Frank Edmondson, Butte Falls. Miss Grow is a senior at Eagle Point High school. Her fiance is a graduate of Butte Falls High school and is em ployed, by the U.S. forest ser vice at Butte Falls. Their wedding is planned for June 25. Officers Elected By AAUW Mrs. Gordon S. Mackenzie is the new president-elect of Medford branch, American Association of University Women. Other officers elect ed at the meeting last Wed nesday are: Mrs. Edwin W. Gebhard, re-efected first vice president; Mrs. Calvin L. Smith, second vice president; Miss Josephine Koppes, sec retary; Mrs. Alan S. Markee, treasurer. Names of seven local wom en have been added to the state roster of qualified wom en, according to Mrs. Thomas McCamant, status of women committee chairman. This roster is placed in the gover nor's office for reference in appointing boards and com mittees. Mrs. Robert F. Wilcox, chairman of the recent grad uates group, told of the month ly meetings which are open to AAUW members who have graduated within the last ten years. A survey of employment of the senior age group is now in progress locally to de termine employers' practices in hiring older people and to provide information for the 1961 White House "conference on aging. Mrs. Nick A. Ger ritsen, chairman of AAUW social and economic issues committee, is in charge of the project. Mrs. Gerritsen introduced a panel discussion of "The Nonconformist Child Acquires Knowledge," explaining that the term "nonconformist" was used to describe the trouble causing child with no specific handicap. Bruce Metzger, Jackson school principal, Bruce Nel son, dean of boys at Hedrick Junior High school, and Dr. Betty Lou Dunlop, field Su pervisor of teaching at Sou thern Oregon college, told how non-conformity is dealt with at each aj3 level. Date Announced For Annual Show Central Point The second annual flower show of Crater Garden club will be held April 2 from 1:30 to 8:30 p.m. in the Crater High school cafetorium on North Pacific highway. All members and friends of garden clubs in the area are invited to participate. En tries will be accepted between 7:30 and 9:30 ajn. April 2. Arizona Vacation Dr. and Mrs. August W. Glut&ch, 106 Vernada place, Medford, have just returned from an extended winter va cation in Phoenix, Ariz. While in the Arizona resort city, Dr. and Mrs. Glutsch were registered at the Monte Vista apartment - hotel and and made numerous sightsee ing trips in the area. Mears Announcement was made recently of the engagement of Miss Virginia Dolan, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Thomas Dolan, Lakewood, N.J.. to Clark E. Mears. Mr. Mears is a son of Mr. and Mrs. Clark C. Mears, 1617 Oregon avenue. Miss Dolan is a graduate of Lakewood High school and is nresently employed at U.S Naval Air station, Lakehurst, N.J. - Mr. Mears is a 1957 gradu ate of Medford High school, and is serving with the U.S Navy at Lakehurst. A May wedding is planned - Joyce Brock Is Bride of John Sherman Of interest to valley resi dents is the wedding of Miss Joyce Louise Brock and John Childers Sherman, February 7 at First Orthodox Presby terian church, Portland. The bride is a daughter of Mrs. Boyd W. Brock, Hills- boro, and the late Mr. Brock, former manager of Central Point Lumber company. She attended Medford elementary and Central Point junior and high schools before moving to Hillsboro. Mr. Sherman is a son of Mrs. Edward H. Sherman, Portland, and the late Mr. Sherman. The Rev. Carl A. Ahlefldt officiated at the three o'clock afternoon rites. Miss Evelyn Pauline Brock, Portland, attended her sister and best man was Dr. William D. Sherman, Seattle, brother of the bridegroom. A reception followed the ceremony at the Sherman home. The couple is now at home at 528 S.E. 27th avenue, Port land. The bride attended Lew is and Clark college and is a graduate of the University of Oregon Medical school, school of nursing. She is a registered nurse on the staff of the University of Oregon Medical School hospital. Mr. Sherman is a graduate of the University of Oregon and at tended Portland State college. Mrs. Frank Little, royal ma tron, and Stanley Jones, royal patron, entertained their offi cers at a dinner recently at the home of Mrs. Little. Thirty-four attended. The annual election of offi cers and reports of the court and grand court are on the agenda for the next meeting March 17. A covered-dish din ner will preceed the meeting. Members initiated d u r i n g 1959 will be honored. Seaside Couple Week End Guests Mr. and Mrs. Jens Herman, Seaside, Ore., were guests of Mr. and Mrs. Morris Bough ner, 202 South Orange street, last week end. Saturday eve ning, February 27, Mr. and Mrs. Herman and Mr. Bough ner motored to Myrtle Creek, Ore., where Valentine chap ter of the Order of Eastern Star celebrated its golden anniversary. Others attending from Med ford were Mr. and Mrs. E. G. Randolph, Mr. and Mrs. Roy Nordwick and Mrs. Audrey E. Roberts. Mrs. Herman is associate grand matron of the Order of Eastern Star in Oregon, and Mr. Boughner is associate grand patron. Knight-Kingsley Rites Announced Ashland Miss Lovena Fern Kingsley, daughter .of Mr. and Mrs. J. W. Kingsley, 138 North Main street, be came the bride of William Jess Knight, son of Mr. and Mrs. Ace Knight 875 Roca street, in a ceremony held February 20 at First Metho dist church. The Rev. Herschel Hall of ficiated at the single ring cer emony held at 6 o'clock in the afternoon." The bride wore a white waltz length frock with pale blue cummerbund. Her head dress and flowers were blue and white. - Following the ceremony a reception was held at the Kingsley home attended by 34 relatives and friends. The couple traveled to San Fran cisco on their wedding trip. - The bride and bridegroom attended Ashland High school. Mr. Knight is employ ed by Selby Chevrolet company. Reservations for the meet ing may be made by calling Mrs. H. D. Field, NOrmandy 4-2204. Open House Celebrates 50th W adding Anniversary Eagle Point - Mr. and Mrs. J. D. Brown, Eagle Point, were honored February 28 at an open house in observance of their golden wedding anni versary. The couple, was married March 2, 1910 at the home of the bride's grandparents, Mr. and Mrs. Sam Cook, on the Applegate. The Rev. W. A. Hurd, Baptist minister, offi ciated at the wedding. The Browns have made their home in Jackson county since that time. Before her marriage, Mrs. Brown was Winnie Knox. About 85 relatives and friends called between 1:30 and 4:30 during the open house. Hostesses for the event were Mrs. Ray Huson, Med ford, daughter of the honor ed couple, and Mrs. Dean Gar rett, Glendale, granddaugh ter. Gold candles, daffodils and acacia decorated the rooms for the event. Mrs. Lester McFall cut and served the tiered wedding cake and Mrs. Peter F i c k , sister of Mrs. Brown, poured the coffee. Mrs. " Olin Knox, Yamhill, Ore., sister-in-law , of Mrs. Brown, presided at the punch bowl. Mrs. Marvin " Brown, Oakridge, Ore., and Miss Faye Brown, a granddaughter, were in charge of the guest book. Mrs. Roy Hisey, Red mond, was at the gift table. Among the out-of-town rel atives attending were Leon Brown, son, Springfield, Ore.; Marvin Brown, Oakridge, Ore., grandson; Olin Knox Yamhil, Ore., brother of Mrs. Brown; Scottie and Ross Gar rett, Glendale, Ore., great grandchildren; and Roy His ey, Redmond, nephew of Mr. Brown. Others attending were Mrs. Leon Brown and family, Springfield; and Don Hisey, Redmond. Zuleima Temple To Hold Election Zuleima temple, Daughters of the Nile, will hold its an nual election of officers, Sat urday, March 12, at 1 o'clock in the Grants Pass Masonic temple. A tea given by the Coos Bay-North Bend club, assist ed by Mrs. Eugene Trahern and Mrs. Harold W. Salter, will follow the meeting. (Classic photo) Student Visits In California Miss Penny Sampert, Med ford High school student, has returned to her classes after a visit with her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Herbert L. Sampert at the University of California in Berkeley. Mr. Sampert was recently appointed a lecturer at the university and is teaching for estry engineering and related subjects as a member of the faculty. The school of for estry, within the College of Agriculture, covers the study of grasses and range manage ment which Miss Sampert finds related to her project as a 4-H club member. The Samperts sold their home at 158 Renault avenue, and Miss Sampert is living with friends in the Lake Creek area until completing her senior year.
