Wal ter Norblad (R-Ore.) has an nounced his candidacy for re election to Congress from the state s first district. Norblad, 51, is serving his eighth term in Congress. He said "while I am still two years younger than the average member of the House, I have all important seniority over three-fourths of the mem bership. Although I do not ap prove of ; the congressional seniority system, nevertheless, it exists and does give our district a very decided advan tage." He is the third-ranking Re publican on the Armed Serv ices Committee and is a com bat veteran of World War II. He formerly lived in As toria and now is a resident of Staytori. . , Heppner Teacher Wins Assault Suit Salem, (DPD A Heppner school teacher, John R. Cope- land, has been awarded $3,000 by a Marion County Circuit Court jury in a suit charging former Silverton Police Chief R. R. Main with assault. Dismissed were similar suits against two other Silver- ton policemen. The action fol lowed an accident in Silverton in July of 1957. Police apprehended the youth when they conducted a routine check on a car containing three boys. One of them iden tified himself as the runaway, police said. He was placed in the county jail awaiting his parents who will pick him up. The other boys were re leased. A member of the royal fam ily said Friday night the form er Parisian art student's preg nancy became known before she and the 40-year-old Shah began their current tour of Pakistan. The Shah divorced his first two wives because they failed to bear him a male heir to the peacock throne of Persia. On the eve of his marriage to Farah, he said "this will be my last." The Shah and the Queen have been scheduled to begin a tour of Europe and Sweden in May, but a member of the royal family told UPI the trip may be cancelled if the court doctors think it best. The 40-year-old Shah has a daughter, Princess Shahnaz, by his first wife. His second marriage to Princess Soraya was dissolved two years ago. Congress Elects Washington Two presi dents, Thomas Jefferson and John Quincy Adams, were elected to that office by con gress, having failed to poll a majority of the states' elector al votes previously. Farley, 61, of 3563 Jacksonville highway, who died at his residence Friday morning, will be held at Perl Funeral home Monday at 3:30 p.m. The Rev. Dr. Farley was born in Lis bon, La., Nov. 30, 1898, and had been a resident of the Medford area for 20 years. He was a veterinarian. Sohnry acquired permit to erect a $9,000 residence at 2270 Delta Wa ters rd. Mrs. . Gleeson Dies Word has been received that Mrs. William Gleeson, . Portland, Oregon past grand secretary of the Knights of Pythias, died Feb. 25. Mrs. Gleeson was the installing officer for Idella Rogue Santha, Nomads of Avrudaka, when it was in stituted in 1946. Appling's Sayings Of No Surprise Bend-(UPD-Peter M. Gunnar, chairman of the Republican State Central Committee, said today that "The voters of Oregon should not be surpris ed that Secretary of State Howell Appling has instituted programs which will save about $250,000 in the bien-nium." Gunnar, here for a GOP leadership training school, said Appling was appointed "principally because of his ad ministrative experience and his business background. "These two qualifications ideally suit him to institute and follow through on pro grams which will mean that the taxpayers of Oregon re ceive the greatest possible value for every tax dollar," Gunnar said. Street Trees May Be Planted Soon, Committee Notes Members of Medford's ' street tree planning commit- ttee have reminded residents that trees should be planted soon if citizens along streets plan to plant them this spring. Several trees have been planted along parking strips already this spring, commit tee members noted, but the time in which they can be planted is becoming limited. The street tree planting program was started about four years ago, and many streets in the city have been planted. Members pointed out that residents may plant what they wish on their own property, and the committee " will give advice as to the type of tree desirable if contacted. How ever, if residents wish to plant trees . in the parking strip -that is the area-between the sidewalk or its location and the street they must first find out from the city which tree is designated for that particular street. Streets Planned The committee has most of the city streets planned. The program has been developed and trees selected on the basis of soil, what type tree would look best and other factors. . Members of the committee also pointed out that residents who wish to remove trees from the parking strip must first obtain a permit from the city, or be subject to a fine. The parking strip, committee members noted, is city proper ty, and residents must ob serve city ordinances in plan ning to remove or plant trees there. Residents wishing to plant trees in the parking strip may contact the city hall to obtain the name of the tree selected for the street on which they live. Monday night, was back in . custody Saturday. J Sheriff's offices said Len ahan gave himself up ; to authorities at the Multnomah county farm near Troutdale. He had been held for trial on habitual criminal charges. Ashland Woman Injured in Mishap Ashland-A 26-year-old Ash land woman suffered minor injuries and her 2-year-old daughter escaped unhurt when the car in which they were riding skidded and rolled over while attempting to pass another car on High way 66 east of here Friday evening. Mrs. Bettie Clark, of 4450 Highway 66. was taken to Ashland General hospital. X-rays were taken and she was released later in the eve ning, police said. Riding with Mrs. Clark. state police reported, was her daughter. Jennifer. Police said the car was east- j bound on the highway when it skidded and struck the j roaa s snouiaer, causing it to turn over.
