House Votes To
Uphold Veto of
Pollution Bill
Washington-(UPD-The House
today upheld President Eis
enhower's veto of a Demo
cratic bill to boost federal
spending to combat pollution
of rivers, streams and lakes.
The vote to override was
249-157. 22 votes short of the
required two-thirds. Voting to
override were 234 Democrats
and 15 Republicans. Of those
who voted to sustain, 130
were ReDublicans and Zi
Democrats.
To Become Issue
The roll call vote killed the
first maior bill passed by the
election-year Congress. Demo
crats vowed they would make
it a live grass roots issue in
this year's election campaign.
Democratic House leaders
had conceded in advance they
had almost no chance of mus
tering the two-thirds vote nec
essary to override the veto.
But thev believed that a di
rect challenge to the Presi
dent on water pollution would
help their party in next .No
vember's elections.
