Study All ' questionnaires for the cancer prevention study made by the Jackson county unit, American Cancer Society, have been returned to the Portland . headquarters, ac cording to Mrs. Walter Gar ner and Mrs. Jack James, co- chairmen for the study The Jackson county 1,000- family canvass is a part of a 17-state study throughout the nation which will include documentaries from one mil lion families. An extensive questionnaire was presented each family contacted. Data from the confidential stuay will be used m a six year study of selected fami lies to help establish possible trends in cancer occurrence. Additional questionnaires will Panel Discussion Set by NOMA Here A panel discussion on "The Necessary Qualifications of Applicants for Office Jobs" will be held Monday, Feb. 22, at the meeting of the Medford chapter, National Office Man agement association. The meeting will be held at Southern O r e g o,n college Britt Student hall, at 7:30 p.m. Panel members will include A. R. Leavitt, personnel di rector, California Oregon Power company, Medford; A. C. Fries Jr., manager, U.S. National bank, Ashland branch; Stewart Hopper, in structor, Eagle Point High school; John Hryze, . office manager, Josephine General hospital, Grants Pass; and Mrs. Ethel S. Schultz, Naumes Equipment and Fuel company. Mrs. Schultz, moderator, is chairman of the education committee, which is in charge of the evening's program. Discussed will be rules re garding applying for office jobs and what is expected of the applicants who wish to be come efficient workers. Students, teachers and all other interested persons are invited to attend. Flying Object in Alaska Is Neieor Anchorage, Alaska - (DPD -The Alaskan Air Command in dicated Friday the unidenti fied flying object sighted over northwestern Alaska last Sun day was an extremely high speed, white-hot meteor. The Air Force said it is be lieved the object was travel ing at a much higher speed than any known satellite, and due to this speed, missiles and rockets were ruled out. Dr. Christian T. Elvey, di rector of the geophysical in stitute at the University of Alaska, concurred in the Air Force findings. Eagle Point Man Appears in Court Albert Milton Brown, Eagle Point, appeared in district court Thursday on charges of assault with a dangerous wea pon and was bound over to the grand jury. Brown is being held in the Jackson county jail in lieu of $2,500 bail. He is charged with assaulting Carl Milton Hoist, Camp White. m Questionnaires for Cancer Prevention Are Returned be mailed to participating families as cancer trends be come noticeable, the cochair men explained. Head Research Group Heading the Medford re search group are Mrs. Ray Frisbie, Mrs. Ralph Thomp sen, Mrs. Joe Beach, Mrs. B. Brandt Bartels, Mrs. Alexan der Dumas and Mrs. Irene Grigsby. Mrs. Grigsby was complimented by the Jackson county unit for contacting 50 families on her own. Each re search leader was to contact 10 others, who in turn would contact 10 families or more. County research leaders in cluded Mrs. William Dawkins and Mrs. Sid Ainsworth, both of Ashland, who enrolled 160 families; Mrs. C. O. Long and Mrs. "John Baldwin, Talent area; Mrs. D. H. Giles, Griffin Creek; Mrs. Leon Offenbach er and Mrs. Marcel LaPinec, Jacksonville-Applegate; Mrs. Richard Bartuss, Shady Cove; Mrs. C. Norman Gail, Gold Hill; Mrs. Earle Jossy, Eagle Point, Mrs. Leo Hoag, Pros pect; Mrs. Hazel Engle, Rogue River; and Mrs. Wilton White, Central Point. The research leaders are re sponsible for contacting each family in their area annually to check addresses, employ ment changes and other data. The Jackson county unit plans to show a film on can cer called, "The Other City" the evening of March 22, and the morning of March 23 at the Holly theater, Medford, and the morning of March 24 at the Varsity theater in Ash land. This is a free showing for men and women. Social Workers Conference Slated Portland-The Annual Con ference on Social Welfare will be held March 7 and 8 at the Sheraton-Portland hotel here, according to President Jack Glass of Eugene. More than 500 are expected to attend. The conference member ship is composed of profes sional social workers and lay persons who are interested in social welfare and community betterment and membership is drawn from all sections of Oregon. Principal speakers will be Professor Donald S. Howard, dean of the school of social work, University of Cali fornia; Professor Herbert Bisno, department of sociol ogy, University of Oregon; and Miss Gladys Dobson, di rector, school social work de partment, Portland Public schools. ; " The National Association of Social Workers will hold its annual breakfast Tuesday, March 8, at the Sheraton Portland hotel in conjunction with the conference. School of Blind Subject of Program The Oregon School for the Blind will be the subject of "In Our Care," a weekly documentary series on state institutions to be shown at 11:30 o'clock this morning on KBES-TV, Medford.
