Ore., national president of Chin Up clubs, was to be in Medford tonight to attend the semi-annual birthday dinner of the Jackson county chap ter. The meeting will be held at the Girls Community club, 229 North Bartlett St., at 6:30 p.m. Chapter members who have had birthdays in the last six months will . be . honored, at the dinner, .vhich will be a potluck affair. -- Judd will be accompanied by his wife, who is national secretary. The Chin Up club is an or ganization of physically handi capped persons. Many people ask if there is any really good, test for can cer in its early stages, and I have to say I know of none. The best- ev-ery-day test for cancer is probably what is called the red-blood sedimen tation rate test. If the Ml 1 " . OR. Alvarez; ugure is iow- under 25 mm.-there is not much chance that the person has a cancer of any size: With a big ulcerating growth or a scattered growth, the figure is likely to be over 100 mm The trouble with this is that by the time the sedimentation rate is' high, the cancer is likely to be inoperable. It is extremely difficult to find a test that will reveal a small cancer, like a little nodule or ulcer on a person's face. The difficulty is that such a small nodule or ulcer does not appreciably change the chemistry of the body. I imagine the main hope is that some day researchers will find that before a cancer can get going in a body there must be some preparatory change. Then, perhaps, we can get a test to reveal that. So far as I can see, the only way in which a person past middle age can avoid getting an inoperable cancer is to watch out for growing lumps, for bleeding from one of the body-openings, for a huski ness of the voice, . or a chron ic cough; for a new and per sistent pain somewhere; for something strange in a bodily function-such as a constipa tion never present before; or a new loud gurgling in the bowel; or a trouble in swal lowing; or a pain on eating; or (in a woman) a foul dis charge from the vagina; or a sudden new weakness, or anemia, or loss of weight. Boeck's Sarcoid I get letters asking what is Boeck's sarcoid. It is a disease in which little nodules of "tu bercles" form in many parts of the body. In many ways these nodules look -like those of tuberculosis but many tests indicate that the cause can not be the germ that causes tuberculosis. It may that a virus is at work, but so far as I have been able to learn, the cause of this peculiar dies ease is . not known. The fact that sometimes the trouble seems to be curable with strong antibiotics suggests a bacterial cause. The symp toms can be severe and the disease can be long-lasting. (Released by the Register and Tribune Syndicate. 1960) Big Crowd Expected At Graham Rally Salisbury, Southern Rho- desia-UPD-A crowd of 30,000 persons of all races is expect ed to turn out for evangelist Billy Graham's "African cru sade" rally to be held here next week, it was reported today. . Truckloads of Africans will be transported to the show grounds in the city from out lying districts. Graham's address will be broadcast to centers outside of town and in Gatooma in the southern Rhodesian mid lands. All the churches in Salis bury with the exception of the Roman Catholic Church will take part in the rally. NOT WORTH IT Traverse City, Mich. (DPI - The burglary trade is just too costly these days, according to Richard Weiselberg, 26. Weis elberg, accused of pulling a $100 tavern holdup, said he spent $50 of the money on taxi and bus fares to get out of town. I Christmas Trees Made Into Canes . Alvarado, Tex.-UPD-In the past 67 years, William Oscar Bowden has helped hundreds of disabled persons get around with walking canes made from discarded Christmas trees. - i ' It all began when Bowden agreed to break 80 wild horses for a neighbor in Brown County in 1893. He broke 79 of the "out laws," as the horses were then called, but the last one threw him. He hobbled on crutches for several : weeks before he learned his hip was broken. When it healed, his right leg was an inch shorter than the left. Needing a walking stick, Bowden carved one from a discarded Christmas tree, and has been making them ever since. Today, at 88, the retired pharmacist ' turns out two canes a day in his back porch workshop from trees supplied by his neighbors. Decision Near on Detector Missiles Washington -(UPD- The gov ernment is near a decision on whether to push all-out de velopment of military satel lites capable of detecting a Soviet missile attack the in stant it is launched, Lit. Gen. Bernard A. Schriver said Thursday. Schriever, chief of Air Force research and develop ment, said a decision prob-' ably will come in 30 days. The project would call for converting Midas satellites into fully operating military systems. Schriever said in an inter view that such satellites could be fully operating as warning systems before 1965. Midas means "missile de fense alarm system." So far it is a research program with a current budget of $60 mil lion. It would get an addi tional $102 million under the administration's new budget for the year starting July 1.
