Watkins Mt the Greatest Flycatcher of All You can purchase a "fly catcher" at any hardware or 5-and-10-cent store. There is another effective fly-catcher, commonly known as 'fly paper," or one can make use of another device to accomp lish the same purpose. This is called a fly-swatter. But the best flycatcher of all is a bird. He's so good at it that he is aptly named Fly catcher. He works at the job all the time. ' About the largest of the en tire family is the so-called "crested flycatcher," about the size of a robin or a mock ing bird but with a brownish colored body and yellowish white breast. Also, this fly catcher has a rather long bill and the male wears a perky tuft of feathers in the form of a crest on the top of his head. Peculiar Call Even though you may not recognize the bird by sight you have probably heard him and been somewhat surprised by the peculiar call he utters. When you do hear him you might -. associate the sound with a radio or the mysterious 'beeps" from an earth orbit ing satellite, rather than a call coming from a bird. Everyone is familiar with the measured beep-beep-beep of a time signal sent out each day from time stations. The cry of the flycatcher is exact ly the same and for this rea son the flycatcher has been called the "time-signal-bird." During the mating season the call sometimes becomes a little more musical, but even then the bird frequently drops into the measured .ca dence of a mechanical time beat. All the flycatchers are naturally quarrelsome. They do not get along too well with other birds and not too well with one another. As a con sequence only a single pair will ever be found (in -one locality. Usually . they build their nests in abandoned woodpeck er holes where they lay from four to six eggs, each egg generously marked with brown splashes. The birds de pend solely on insects for food, catching most of them while on the wing. Peculiarities Most birds, like all the rest of us, have many peculiarities but the flycatchers have some habits that are downright fan tastic, defying even common sense. This bird goes all out in bizarre "furnishings" for its nest by installing a part of the standard equip ment a piece of snake-skin. Never does this skin seem to be a part of the nest itself. The skin, or in the absence of a suitable skin a piece of cello phane, is hung on the wall or draped over the edge of the nest opening. No one has ever advanced a reasonable ex planation for this universal practice, unless it is intended to frighten away intruders. Thsre may be some less obvious r e a s on for this strange behavior. The heathen witch - doctor always uses snake skins as a "charm or as a strengthening agent" for some particular kind of "medicine." Could this insect eating bird we call the fly catcher, also have some super- Swiss Forester To Attend Program Corvallis-Dr. Fritz Fischer, director of the Swiss Forest Research Institute at Zurich, Switzerland, will be the 1960 visiting lecturer at the Ore gon State college school of forestry during April and May. The program is under the auspices of the Louis W. and Maude Hill Family Foundation. During his stay on the campus, Dr. Fischer will con duct special graduate and staff seminars on European forestry, Swiss watershed pro tection practices, forest educa tion, forest research and log ging methods used in the mountainous terrain of his country. He will also deliver a series of public lectures. Under the program initiat ed in 1955. foresters of inter national-renown are brought to the Oregon State school of forestry to keep students and staff abreast of new develop ments in the field of forest land management. Previous lecturers have in cluded D. S. Jeffers, dean emeritus of forestry, Univer sity of Idaho; Thorsten Streyffert, rector of the Swed ish Royal College of Forestry, and Leo Isaac, American for est researcher. stitious ideas?
