Johnson (D-Tex.) could lose his southern sup port for the Democratic pres idential nomination within the next several weeks. Or, southern congressional sources feel, he could mold the Dixie states into a solid phalanx of delegates which will stick with him to the end. It all depends on what Johnson does during civil rights debate in the Senate. So far the majority leader has said only that he wants a "good" civil rights bill. Southerners Edgy He had never exrjlalned th term "good." yet it was enough to make some outh. erners edgy. For instance, Gov. John Patterson of Alabama, a staunch backer of Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass). onlv two weeks ago indicated that Johnson might not be accept- aoie it he continued to talk civil rights. But overall the southerner. don't care what Johnson savs They're worried about what he does. As one southern source nut it, "Harry Truman always talked a lot of civil rights hut he never did anything." Southern senators, although most of them won't publicly say so, much prefer Johnson to any of the other candidates. ben. John Stennis (D-Miss.) al ready has endorsed Johnson publicly. But at the same time, they know that they can't sell Johnson to their states if he becomes a prime mover for a strong civil rights bill. This would be especially true if the bill includes the federal court referee proposal, the most noxious of the cur rent proposals to the south erners. Told to Watch Out One Senator, Herman E. Talmadge (D-Ga.), has al ready notified Johnson to watch out for his southern support during the civil rights debate. To the southerners. John. son is one of them. He may claim to be a westerner but that doesn't fool the Dixie delegations. Southern sources say they can explain awav a stron civil rights urge on the part of Kennedy or Sen. Hubert H. Humphrey (D-Minn.) who are northerners. But thev can't do the same for Johnson. They concede that th ma jority leader is about to em bark on the most perilous tightrope act of his career and they hope he can make it. If he doesn't, it could mean the south will switch to a favorite son candidate of its own - possibly Sens. Richard . B. Russell or Herman E. Tal madge - but only as a last re- -sort. Members of the( committee are Mrs. Dave Irvine. Mrs.' Floyd Eastwood, John Wat kins, Lowell Iverson and Jamison. The committee will review present rules and make recommendations at tht next meeting of the associa tion at 7:30 a.m. Tuesday. Feb. 23, at the Jackson hotel. Several valley civic clubs and organizations are renre- sented at the meetings, Festi val officials said, but other groups and individuals in Medford and vicinity are en couraged to attend and assist in planning the event.
