WA Tuesday, Feb. 16, 1960 Two Officials Speak at Salary Rally Held Here Several speakers at a salary rally for federal employees in soutnern Oregon held last week, urged local employees to write their congressmen asking for a salary increase. The meeting was held at the Girls Community club with persons attending from Ashland, Medford, Grants Pass, Klamath Falls, Rose- burg, Coos Bay, Coquille, Hillsboro. and Camn White. Larry M. Rose, state presi dent of the National Associa tion of Letter Carriers, and Nicholas Cole, northwest re gional director of the NALC, both commented on the Dav scale of the postal service em ployee. They stressed the need of writing letters to congres sional leaders telling the need lor a pay raise. Cole compared the salaries of postal workers with steel workers, adding that the steel workers now average about $1,000 per year more than the federal postal employee. Opening the meeting, Se- Dastiano J. Fagne, president of the Medford chapter, NALC, spoke on the need for public support to obtain a pay raise for federal employees this year. James A. Redden, speaking on the behalf of Sen. Wayne Morse, encouraged persons to write their congressional lead ers on the matter. A letter was also read from Sen. Nixon To Dodge Religion Issue Detroit-fOPD-Vice President Richard M. Nixon said Mon day religion should not be an issue in the 1960 election and that "in any part I play I will not make it an issue." Nixon told a news confer ence that "the country has moved considerably toward understanding since 1928 when religioh played a major part" in the campaign in which Democrat Alfred E. Smith was defeated. Smith was a Roman Catho lic as is Sen. John F. Kennedy (D-Mass.) who is a leading contender for the Democratic presidential nomination this year. "Nixon also told reporters, in discussing his role in the steel strike settlement, that he was making a personal study of the "concentration of power" in unions and large corporations. Object of the search was Ralph Droth, Portland. Droth was owner of a boat which capsized Saturday while he and two others were fishing.
