There the kids find love, understanding, and a kind of courage that only someone like Cunningham can give so well. The story of Cunningham's ranch begins in 1946. After a lecture, several women talked to him about a boy who had been arrested a number of times for theft. His father was a confirmed criminal who taught the boy thievery. The women felt that the boy was not really bad but, if sent to a reform school, would certainly become a criminal himself. Glen talked to the local judge who suggested that Cun ningham take the boy to his ranch for the summer and put into practice his theories about child correction. Glen readily agreed and watched the "juvenile delin quent" undergo a complete change of personality and return to his home town a well-adjusted youth. This success gave Glen and his wife the idea of turn ing their ranch into a summer camp for children. The ram bling 14-room house was remodeled into a dormitory. Within a short time, though, the big house couldn't take care of all the children. Barns were made into barracks, and camp sites were set up. Last summer, 600 children were on Glen's ranch. Many . came for visits of several days to a week. There were groups from hospitals, schools, Boy Scout troops, and church organizations. Youngsters who spend the entire summer usually are sent by courts, correctional institutions, or orphanages. And as Glen travels the country for lectures, he offers any child in need of help a chance to spend the summer on the ranch. No child is charged for his stay, although it costs Glen around $1,500 a month to operate the project. There is no income from the ranch, either. The animals eat all the grain and feed. Glen covers the cost with income from his lec tures but, with seven children of his own, finds the going rough sometimes. But Glen and his wife don't look on their work as noble or unusual. They have a philosophy that everyone should do what pleases him most. "Nothing we could do would give us more satisfaction than working with and helping chil dren," Glen says. "I suppose that's the reason we do it."
